SINSINAWA — Sister Barbara Hutfless, OP, died Aug. 6, 2020, at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wis. Her religious name was Sister Richaria. The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, Aug. 14, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Barbara made her first religious profession as a Dominican Sister of Sinsinawa Aug. 5, 1961, and her perpetual profession Aug. 5, 1966. She served as a culinary artist for 13 years and a teacher aide for two years before beginning a 29-year ministry of teaching. She served in Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Illinois and Colorado.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Barbara served as culinary artist at the Motherhouse, Sinsinawa, 1961-1963 and 1967-1968.
Sister Barbara was born March 31, 1941, in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of Richard and Phyllis (Hurley) Hutfless. Her parents and a brother, Dennis Hutfless, preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister, Patricia DeMare; a brother, Richard Hutfless; nieces; nephews; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared 59 years of religious life.
