MADISON — The Diocesan Hispanic Choir is beginning its eighth year with rehearsals held Monday evenings at the Bishop O’Connor Center in Madison.
Dr. Patrick Gorman, director of the Diocese of Madison’s Office of Worship, says that the Hispanic Choir is “one of our diocese’s well-kept secrets.”
The choir is sponsored by the Office of Worship and directed by its founder, Maria A. (Toni) Kellor, a long-time church musician and Spanish teacher.
“The choir always welcomes new members as singers and instrumentalists. A person does not have to be of Hispanic origin or even know Spanish to participate in and enjoy the choir,” said Gorman.
The rehearsals are led in English and Spanish, he noted, “and Toni is a patient and talented teacher.”
Perhaps most importantly, said Gorman, “the choir brings cultures together in the midst of the Church. They can serve as a model for our parishes of successfully serving and ministering to and with the entire community.”
Gorman said, “I heartily recommend the choir. This is a wonderful opportunity for music making for everyone in our diocese. I can also attest from a personal level that Toni has taught me a great deal about Hispanic music and liturgy, and I know that she would be happy to work with you as well.”
What does the choir do?
The choir sings for many diocesan, parish, and civic events. Last year’s calendar included: Fiesta Mexicana Mass at Warner Park, Quinceanera Mass, Mass at Edgewood College, Blessed Sacrament Craft Fair, Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass at St. Patrick in Madison, Our Lady of Guadalupe Masses in Jefferson and Watertown, Christmas Concert, Posadas after the concert at Holy Redeemer in Madison, Easter Vigil bilingual Mass at Holy Redeemer in Madison, Mass (two languages) at St. Thomas Aquinas in Madison, First Communion at St. Joseph in Madison, Mini-Concert (folk music) for Knights of Columbus 4th Degree.
Do I need to know Spanish?
No! Rehearsals are led in English and Spanish and the choir sings in both languages. Many members are not Spanish speakers but are willing to give it a try. It’s a great way to learn in a relaxed and supportive environment.
What is the time commitment?
Rehearsals are Monday evenings at the Bishop O’Connor Center in Madison.
