MADISON — Madison-area residents are increasingly seeking local foods produced on organic and sustainably-run farms.
St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Parish and the Churches Center for Land and People are sponsoring a winter farmers market and brunch on Saturday, Jan. 29, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Madison area residents will have a chance to taste and buy farm products produced locally by sustainable farmers.
The market will run from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; the brunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., or while supplies last. Both the market and brunch will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church’s social hall, 602 Everglade Drive, Madison.
The scrumptious brunch is a special feature of this event, with menu prepared by Steffi Culberson from Goose Chaser Farm in Blanchardville. She will work with church members preparing egg strata (with sausage or vegetarian), creamy potato casserole, French toast with jam, apple salad with yogurt dressing, and breakfast sausage.
A special “kid friendly,” hands-on cooking demonstration will be held at noon, with help from the chef’s six-year-old son.
All foods served will focus on using local ingredients. The winter farmers market will feature these foods and a range of other locally grown or produced items, including cheese, potatoes, maple syrup, honey, preserves, salsa, bloody mary mix, soap, variety of meats, poultry, and eggs.
This winter farmers market and brunch promotes economic justice by supporting family farmers and rural communities; Earth stewardship by buying locally from sustainable farmers; community and spirituality by connecting farmers and consumers, rural and urban people.
Ten percent of the market proceeds will go to the Harvest of Hope Fund, a farm emergency fund helping Wisconsin farm families in crisis.
Tickets for the brunch may be purchased by contacting Jennifer Ludtke at jennifer@stamadison.org or at the door on January 29. The suggested donation is $10 for adults; $4 for children age five to 13; children under five eat free; $25 per family maximum. Come, eat, buy, and enjoy!
