OREGON — Deacon William Stack, age 68, died on Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at home (in Oregon, Wis.) surrounded by his family.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. at Holy Mother of Consolation Church, 651 N. Main St., Oregon, with visitation from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Msgr. James Gunn, pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish, Waunakee, was the main celebrant and homilist.
Deacon Stack was born November 25, 1945, in Evergreen Park, Ill., to Thomas J. and Zita C. (Nelligan) Stack. He attended St. Joseph College, Rensselaer, Ind., and received and honorable discharge from the Air Force after four years of military service. On August 3, 1968, he married Susan Nordhaus at St. Therese of the Little Flower Parish in Chicago. They had four children: Kathryn, William, Patrick, and Matthew.
On December 12, 1987, Stack was ordained a permanent deacon at St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral in La Crosse by Bishop John J. Paul. He served as a deacon at St. Mary Parish, Rothschild, in the Diocese of La Crosse for five years prior to moving to the Diocese of Madison/
On December 15, 2000, Deacon stack was incardinated into the Diocese of Madison under Bishop William H. Bullock. He served in the capacity of deacon at St. John the Baptist Parish, Waunakee; St. Joseph Parish, Madison; and St. Joseph Parish, Edgerton. He was also appointed chaplain for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Deacon Stack retired from UW Hospitals and Clinics in 2011.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; sons, William (Amy), Patrick (Mandy Haak), Matthew (Catherine); his daughter, Kathryn; four grandchildren, Autumn, Aidan, Kiera, and Audrey; his sister, Zita Crowley; and his nieces and nephews.
