CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Catholic Herald-Diocese of Madison won three awards in the 2014 Catholic Press Awards competition sponsored by the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada.
The awards were announced during the Catholic Media Conference held in Charlotte, N.C., June 17 to 20.
The paper’s awards included:- First Place for Best Editorial on a National/International Issue for Catholic Herald Editor Mary C. Uhler for an editorial called “Curbing gun violence: Treat ownership of guns more like ownership of cars” published in the April 18, 2013, issue. Judges commented, “The ever important gun control debate argued in light of bishops’ letter to the Senate.”
- Third Place for Best Coverage of the Year of Faith. Judges liked the fact that the paper went to “where the people are; popular culture and the Hobbits was a great way to feature faith,” they said of one issue.
- Honorable Mention for Best Regular Column-Spiritual Life for the Year of Faith columns by Abbot Marcel Rooney, OSB, president of the Orate Institute of Sacred Liturgy, Music, and Art.
The “Junior Saints” section published in the Catholic Herald during the school year won Second Place for Best Reporting on Special Age Group-On Children and Teens. The section is produced by the Catholic Standard in Washington, D.C. The Catholic Herald includes some content from the Diocese of Madison in its “Junior Saints” sections.
The annual Catholic Media Conference is an educational event dedicated to professionals who communicate and report on the Good News.
It brings together members of the Catholic Press Association and the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals for seminars, keynote speeches, and Masses.
