Making a life-changing detour: Women’s Care Center offers pregnant women a chance to choose life
On January 23, 1973, the United States Supreme Court legalized abortion in the landmark Roe vs. Wade decision.
As we mark the 39th anniversary of that sad decision, many people have been praying and working to give all babies a chance to live. We know that we have to change minds and especially hearts on this issue.
Keep Christmas in our hearts every day of the year
To the editor:
At this time of year I hear about people taking the “Christ out of Christmas.” Why? Because some anti-religious group stops a public Nativity scene. Another is that some people will use the greeting “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.”
What should really define this time of year for us is the feeling in our hearts. Do we only give gifts to get more? Do we only throw parties for public display? Are we only thinking of ourselves?
It’s Vocation Awareness Week: Pray! Invite! Encourage! Affirm! Vocations
Every year since 1976, the Catholic Church in the United States has celebrated National Vocation Awareness Week (NVAW) as a special time when we pray for the renewal and strengthening of all vocations within the Church.
This includes the vocations of married and single people; men serving as priests, deacons, and Brothers; and women serving as religious Sisters.
Faith and public life: Religion should not be relegated only to the private sphere
During the holiday season, we were subjected again to “Christmas wars” about public displays of Nativity scenes and controversies over calling a Christmas tree by its real name.
These squabbles are really part of a deeper effort to relegate religious practice to the private sphere. There are those who say, “It’s okay for you to practice your faith, but do it behind closed doors.”
PLW concurs with cardinal on ‘contraceptive mentality’
To the editor:
Thank you to Mary Uhler and the Catholic Herald for your report on Cardinal Raymond Burke’s recent compelling address on the need to counter the “contraceptive mentality” and “advance the culture of life” with “new enthusiasm and new energy.”
As Pro-Wisconsin (PLW) embarks on our 20th year in 2012, we realistically concur with His Eminence Cardinal Burke, in recognition that “the struggle is fierce and the contrary forces are many and clever.”
Thanks to cardinal, bishop for speaking the truth
To the editor:
Thank you for Mary Uhler’s excellent article on Raymond Cardinal Burke’s recent statement on contraception in Illinois. We were blessed to inform Cardinal Burke of the Madison Catholic Herald covering that story after he celebrated Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse on Friday, Dec. 9, the Feast of St. Juan Diego. He was pleased.
My parents gave me 10 brothers and sisters, 20 years from youngest to oldest, and my in-laws gave me my husband, youngest of eight children, born when his father was 40, and his mother was 39. Praise be to God for big families!
Communicating Christ’s message: We hope Cardinal Foley’s legacy will inspire others to carry on his work
With the death of Cardinal John P. Foley on December 11, we have lost a dedicated leader who helped the Church’s message reach people throughout the world.
Many of our readers heard his voice for 25 years on the television and radio broadcasts of the pope’s Christmas midnight Mass. Cardinal Foley always explained what was going on in a clear style. I still remember the way he pronounced “Cath – o – lic” by enunciating every syllable.
Thank you!
To the editor:
St. Cecilia Parish in Wisconsin Dells is most appreciative of the diocesan offices for their support during the recent loss of our pastor, Msgr. Felix Oehrlein. These offices were most understanding and truly concerned for our welfare.
Amendment would protect all pre-born babies
To the editor:
I just read the article on efforts to provide constitutional protections for pre-born children in Wisconsin.
Catholics who argue that a Wisconsin Personhood Amendment is “wrong for Wisconsin” might look to the Catechism for guidance. Taken from an excerpt of Donum Vitae (authored by Cardinal Ratzinger before he became Pope Benedict XVI), Catechism 2270 states, “From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.”
