SINSINAWA — Sr. Alfonso Glancey, OP, died March 16, 2021, at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wis. The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, March 24, followed by burial of the cremains in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Alfonso made her first profession as a Dominican Sister of Sinsinawa Aug. 5, 1945, and her perpetual profession Aug. 5, 1948. She served in education for 69 years as teacher, principal, support staff, and volunteer. Sister Alfonso liked to see the children’s happy faces. In 2008, she said, “I hope they see happiness in my face, too.” She served in Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Oklahoma.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Alfonso taught at St. Joseph, Baraboo, 1958-1963; served as support staff at Sr. Jerome School, Columbus, 1991-1995, and St. Dennis School, Madison, 1999-2016; and volunteered at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception School, Portage, 1995-1998.
Sister Alfonso was born June 24, 1925, in West Allis, Wis., the daughter of James and Pearle (Emard) Glancey. Her parents; two sisters, Louanna Duren and Magdalene Glancey; and three brothers, Norbert Glancey, LeRoy Glancey, and Robert Glancey, preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister, Veronica Garvey; nieces; nephews; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared 75 years of religious life.
