Law enforcement, fire personnel invited to Blue Mass on May 9

MADISON — In thanksgiving for their faithful service, Fr. Michael Radowicz, pastor, and the parishioners of St. Bernard Parish and the Knights of Columbus invite all law enforcement and fire/EMS personnel to the third annual Blue Mass to be held on Thursday, May 9, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Bernard Church, 2450 Atwood Ave., Madison.

Knights of Columbus involved include Council 9082 of St. Bernard Parish and the Bishop William P. O’Connor 4th Degree Assembly.

Participating in the Mass again this year are Madison Police Chief Mike Koval, Dane County Sheriff David Mahoney, University of Wisconsin Police Chief Kristen Roman, and City of Madison Assistant Fire Chief Michael Popovich.

Celebrate Earth Day with St. Dennis Parish

MADISON — St. Dennis Parish is hosting its second annual Earth Day celebration the weekend of April 27 to 28 with activities and exhibits designed to demonstrate how individuals and families can take steps to reduce their carbon footprint and conserve natural resources.

At the Earth Day event, which is open to the public, participants will be able to:

• Have their carbon footprint calculated by members of the St. Dennis Care for Creation team.

• Learn about the 66-panel solar electric system, installed in 2017 to generate electricity for Saint Dennis School.

Good Friday Tenebrae service in Baraboo

BARABOO — St. Joseph Parish, Baraboo, will again celebrate the beautiful and peaceful Tenebrae service on Good Friday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. Tenebrae, which means “shadows” in Latin, dates to the ancient Church.

The service incorporates light, music, Scripture, and prayer to focus on Jesus’ passion: his betrayal, abandonment, and agony. The Passion narrative is told in readings, followed by Scripture and a musical reflection.

SAUK CITY — Divine Mercy Sunday will be celebrated on April 28 at St. Aloysius Church on 115 Madison St. in Sauk City.

The festivities will begin at 12:30 p.m. and conclude with The Taste of Divine Mercy, which promises a fabulous food celebration at 4 p.m. in the school gym.

Gene-edited babies and the runaway train of in vitro fertilization

In November 2018, a Chinese scientist named He Jankui (known to his associates as “JK”) claimed that he had successfully produced the world’s first gene-edited human babies using “gene surgery.”

The twin girls, he said, were born somewhere in China with a modified gene that makes them immune to infection from HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. A special DNA splicing technique called CRISPR/Cas 9 was used when they were embryos to make the edits. In a series of short videos posted on YouTube, JK offers an explanation of, and justification for, what he did.
