In 1974, Catholic Schools Week was established as the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. This year it occurs from January 27 to February 2. Its theme is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.”

While I was in Chicago for the Christmas break, I had a wonderful meeting with around 30 young Jesuits, all in their “pre-tertianship” period of formation. This means that these men had already passed through their lengthy education in philosophy and theology and had been involved for some time in a ministry of the Jesuit order.
The group I addressed included high school teachers, university professors, journal editors, and doctoral students — and almost all of them were ordained priests. After a simple lunch of soup and sandwiches, we plunged into conversation.
Celebrating Catholic schools
Happy Catholic Schools Week! This coming Sunday marks the beginning of a national, week-long celebration of Catholic schools.
In the Diocese of Madison, each one of the 43 Catholic elementary and high schools will be celebrating their students, teachers, parents, and all of the incredible success and achievements of their students as they learn and grow academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.

Catholic schools are a gift to our nation
My 12 years of education at Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and Aquinas High School in La Crosse prepared me well for life.
I received an excellent academic education, but more importantly, I learned about my Catholic faith and how to put it into practice in serving others.

But while my education was good for me personally, I didn’t realize at the time that our Catholic schools are also a gift to our country.
Madison Catholic Woman’s Club to hold baby shower meeting
MIDDLETON — All women of the Diocese of Madison are invited to join Madison Catholic Woman’s Club (MCWC) members at their annual baby shower lunch meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 2015 Parmenter St., Middleton.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul holds 27th annual Recycle the Warmth blanket drive
MADISON — For good health, school or work success, and general well-being, the warmth and comfort of a good night’s sleep matters to everyone.
But not everyone in our community has a clean, warm blanket to call his or her own this winter, so the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Dane County is holding its 27th annual Recycle the Warmth blanket drive to collect thousands of donated new and gently used clean blankets and other bedding to give away to families or individuals living in low-income households.
