To the editor:
As a past member of the Latin American Mission Program, I have a great concern for immigrant conditions on the border. These are basically Catholic refugees fleeing from abhorrent conditions looking for a safe haven for themselves and their families.
It is past time for the Catholic Church in this country to provide hands-on relief. If each parish in our diocese would sponsor one family, it would be a start in helping fellow Catholics adjust to the circumstances in which they find themselves.
Actually, this is a challenge each parish in the United States should face up to. These are good, hard-working people who want their families to be safe with opportunities to lead a productive life. If each parish in our country sponsored a family, the refugee problem on the border would be less severe.
Our diocese could be the first to meet this challenge and show the state and nation the true compassion of our people. It is time we, as Catholics, step up to do what is right by sponsoring a refugee family.
