To the editor:
I have read Bishop Morlino’s letter regarding the continuing sex abuse scandal in the Church.
He asks us to pray and fast, to make reparation for the sins of the priests and bishops who sexually abused children and adults, and for those in the hierarchy who covered up those sins.
That’s fine; we can do that. However, in addition to prayer and fasting, I would also like to see some action.
Bishops who have been complicit in these coverups should resign immediately. How can they continue to be shepherds of their flock when they have been complicit in covering up crimes against children and adults?
We cannot just allow things to go on as before. Much is at stake here. What the Church needs now is total transparency and total accountability.
Many faithful Catholics are considering cutting off financial contributions to the Church.
Maybe that would help the bishops to see the light.
