To the editor:
It was with great pleasure I read the front page article about the name change of the Apostolate for Persons with Disabilities! The future for persons with disabilities in our diocese looks much brighter.
The added staff can only lead to greater results as the Apostolate works to ensure the full inclusion in parish life for ALL Catholics.
One project I would hope to see result from these changes would be to create a diocesan commission of volunteers with disabilities who have real life experience and expertise as Catholics who confront barriers of all types. Many such barriers are hidden and not well understood by those who lack a disability.
One greatly needed improvement would address the need for ALL the parishes in our diocese to have the SAME assistive listening system. This would ensure that when one visits a parish, they would find access. Right now MOST Catholic parishes do not grant that access.
I look with great hope to this new apostolate. And I am perfectly willing to assist in any way possible.
Blessings,
