To the editor:
In response to the letter concerning “big government” and the Affordable Care Act in the December 26 issue of the Catholic Herald, I would like to express support for the new health care law.
For decades, we, as a country, have let the insurance companies deny health care to those with pre-existing conditions.
We allowed them to create caps on coverage so that parents of children with disabilities had to scramble for coverage of treatments necessary for the basic needs of their child.
We forced people with no health care to use the emergency room as their only access to the health system.
There comes a time when government must do what the private system refuses to do: allow millions of people the heath care that allows them to care for themselves with dignity.
In this difficult economy, health care access is more needed than ever.
