SINSINAWA — Sister Ruth Roland, OP, died Oct. 12, 2013, at the Sinsinawa Dominican Motherhouse, Sinsinawa. Her religious name was Sister Estevan. Natural burial took place Oct. 14, 2013, in the Motherhouse Cemetery. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa Oct. 18, 2013.
Sister Ruth made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 7, 1941, and her final profession Aug. 7, 1944. She taught for 22 years and served as principal for six years and school business officer for two years. Sister Ruth cared for the needs of the elderly for 37 years. She served in Wisconsin, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Washington.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Ruth served at Edgewood High School, Madison, in the business office, as assistant principal, and as teacher, 1968-1970. She ministered at the Motherhouse, Sinsinawa, as continuum of care coordinator, 1997-2000.
Sister Ruth was born Jan. 5, 1922, in Bloomington, Ill., the daughter of Ralph and Edna (Krue) Roland. Her parents; two sisters, Sara Roland and Thelma Thielen; and two brothers, Robert Roland and William Roland, preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces, nephews and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 72 years.
