SINSINAWA — Sister Dorothy Hughes, OP (Marie Matthew), died Sept. 25, 2013, at the Dominican Motherhouse, Sinsinawa. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa Sept. 30, 2013, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Dorothy made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1948, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1951. She taught home economics for seven years, served as a dietitian for 15 years, and ministered in adult education for 43 years. Sister Dorothy served in Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Dorothy served at the Motherhouse, Sinsinawa, as the area agent and instructor for Southwest Wisconsin Technical College, Fennimore, 1970-1994. Since 1994 she has served as the adult basic education instructor for the college. Sister Dorothy has served as coordinator, artist and member of the Sinsinawa Strings Orchestra since 1970.
Sister Dorothy was born April 29, 1924, in Marshfield, Wis., the daughter of Matthew and Caroline (Kraemer) Hughes. Her parents and a sister, Mary Ellen Hughes, preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister, Eileen Temte, and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 65 years.
