MADISON — Pope Benedict has declared a Year of Faith from October 11, 2012, to November 24, 2013, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council.
The Second Vatican Council was convened by Pope John XXIII on October 11, 1962. All of the bishops from around the world (including the Diocese of Madison’s bishop) came together for several sessions of the Council from 1962-65. They examined every aspect of Church life, not to radically depart from the past, but to allow the Church to more effectively proclaim the Good News of Christ in the modern world.
Throughout the Year of Faith information about the Second Vatican Council and what the Council passed on to us will be presented in the Catholic Herald and through numerous diocesan and parish initiatives.
On Thursday, Oct. 11, Bishop Robert C. Morlino will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the convening of the Council by celebrating Evening Prayer at St. Maria Goretti Church, 5313 Flad Ave, Madison, at 7:30 p.m.
Everyone from the diocese is invited to this festive gathering. St. Maria Goretti Church is wheelchair accessible.
