SINSINAWA — Sr. Leona Haggerty, OP (Manuela), died August 30, 2012, at St. Dominic Villa. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa September 4, 2012, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Leona made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 5, 1942, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1945. She taught for 16 years, served as a guidance counselor for seven years, and ministered in school administration for 12 years. Sister Leona was a social worker for 11 years and pastoral associate for one year. She served in Illinois, Wisconsin, South Dakota, and Nebraska.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Leona ministered as a guidance counselor at Edgewood High School, Madison, from 1967 to 1969.
Sister Leona was born June 9, 1913, in Chicago, the daughter of Patrick and Catherine (Coffey) Haggerty. Her parents; a sister, Mary Lackey; and two brothers, Joseph Haggerty and James Haggerty, preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces, nephews, and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 70 years.
