As we commemorate the horrors of nuclear war and the deaths of thousands of civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, it is particularly hopeful to hear Archbishop Edwin O’Brien of Baltimore (former Archbishop for the Military Services) speak on Catholic social teaching regarding nuclear weapons and their use as deterrents.

Alumni need to step forward to support Catholic schools
The start of the new school year is just around the corner. Soon over two million children will be going back to school at over 7,000 Catholic elementary and secondary schools throughout the United States.
The past year (2008-2009) saw a 3.5 percent decrease in enrollment in Catholic schools in our country, according to figures released by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA). There were 78,382 fewer students than the previous academic year.

Queridos amigos,
Mientras les escribo esta columna nos vamos preparando para la Solemnidad de la Asunción de María nuestra Santa Madre, quien “habiendo completado el curso de su vida terrena, fue asunta en cuerpo y alma a la gloria celestial”, como escribiera el Papa Pío XII en la Constitución Apostólica Munificentissimus Deus.
La Solemnidad de la Asunción es un testamento no solo del tremendo amor que Dios le tiene a la Madre Bendita, sino también un poderoso recordatorio del amor que Jesucristo ha mostrado por todos nosotros, al conquistar la muerte mediante Su propia muerte.
Solemnity of the Assumption
Dear Friends,
As I write this column we are preparing for the celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, when the Blessed Mother, “having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory,” as was written by Pope Pius XII in his Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus.
The Solemnity of the Assumption is a testament not only to the tremendous love which God has for the Blessed Mother, but also a powerful reminder of the love which Jesus Christ has demonstrated for all of us, in conquering death through His death.
