Hundreds of staunch supporters of Catholic education and St. Ambrose Academy flocked, or rather, skated, to the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Pastoral Center on December 19 after a huge snowstorm for Christmas Dinner With the Bishop, the school’s major fundraiser of the year.

Four parishes sponsor series on St. Paul
Last summer, Pope Benedict XVI announced a year of celebration in honor of St. Paul the Apostle to run from June 28, 2008 (feast day of the Conversion of St. Paul) to June 28, 2009. The Vatican has encouraged Catholics around the world to study St. Paul in Scripture to “revitalize our faith in the light of his teachings and life.”
Placing our hands in God’s
Kings and presidents. We just celebrated one and soon will inaugurate another. Epiphany manifests the long awaited Messiah and King. January 20th points to a new political administration for our country. Time for a little history.
Years ago, a king’s servant would fold his hands and place them in the hands of the king. The king would pledge his protection of the servant if the servant would pledge to protect the king.
Catholic Schools planning – Emerging themes
The Steering Committee for Catholic Schools Planning met in early December and is moving forward with plans for two major events in January. The first of these is the gathering of the Core Teams. The Core Teams represent a major extension of the planning process. Over 100 people from across the diocese will serve on four Core Teams, one for each area of planning: Catholic Leadership; Academic Curriculum; Enrollment Management; and Fiscal Stewardship.
Members of Armed Forces preserve freedoms we enjoy
To the editor:
I am writing this in response to an article written by Fr. Jim Murphy. The article was part of your December 25, 2008 edition.
Being a proud part of four generations of a military family, I retired from the USAF in 1982, I found his opinions on the Armed Forces of this great nation to be flawed.
Comments on Catholics in military off the mark
To the editor:
Fr. Jim Murphy’s comments about Catholic participation in military service are off the mark. Service in the armed forces by people of faith is difficult and requires those serving to deal with moral issues.
Congress and citizens facing critical life issues in 2009
To the editor:
After January 20, 2009, the U.S. Congress and U.S. citizens will be facing critical issues as follows:
1. American support for China’s coerced abortion policy.
2. Funding for international family planning programs that include abortion.
3. Eliminations of any restrictions on federally funded embryonic stem cell research
Thanks for timely articles, especially Fr. Dietzen’s
To the editor:
I want to thank you for the nice article “Santa Claus Lives on Forever” by Fr. John Dietzen (Catholic Herald, December 11 issue). It was very informative and interesting. I read it and then reread it two or three times more.
Promote peace in the Holy Land
It was especially distressing to follow news of the escalating conflict between Israel and Palestine during the Christmas season. How sad that the place of Jesus’ birth — the Holy Land — suffers from hostilities that seem insurmountable.
Watch one hour
The perpetual Eucharistic Adoration program at Holy Redeemer Parish in downtown Madison and the Eucharistic Adoration for Vocations program available weekday mornings at the Bishop O’Connor Center are both in need of regular “scheduled” adorers (a regular hour every week) and substitutes.
