To the editor:
Father Murphy’s letter in the December 25 edition of the Catholic Herald touched on a number of sensitive issues concerning the military.
I think his letter was important for reminding us that the U.S. Catholic bishops and the pope opposed the invasion of Iraq on moral grounds. Also the letter appropriately recalled the words of Pope John Paul II, who said that war is always a defeat for humanity and it was good to point out again that the U.S. spends a scandalously large amount for the weapons of war.
Still, I doubt very much that one could say that participation in the military at this point in human history involves immoral activity, especially in view of the threats of international terrorism. Father Jim might want to do a double take on that one.
