Dear friends,
Last week our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, released his Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis, on the Eucharist as source and summit of the Church's life and mission.
In recent days, I have begun to study this document and during my seminary visit to Denver this week, I intend to spend a considerable amount of time in prayer and study of the Pope's reflections on the Eucharist.
I would have liked to offer you my thoughts on Sacramentum Caritatis in a column this week, but I would not have been able to give the topic the serious attention it deserves prior to this week's deadline. My column for next week will be devoted to the exhortation.
In the meantime, I invite all of you who might be disposed to such things to read Sacramentum Caritatis for yourselves. The document promises great things for the Church, as the Vatican spokesman said of the document, "theology, spirituality, liturgy, and
life find in this new text an admirable balance and integration. A gift for the Church to receive, meditate, and bring to fulfillment."
The text of the Holy Father's exhortation can be found, among other places, on the Vatican Web site: www.vatican.va
May God continue to bless you during this Lenten season! Praised be Jesus Christ!
