Ordination: "I Bring You News of Great Joy"
By Fr. James Bartylla
DIRECTOR OF THE OFFICE OF VOCATIONS, DIOCESE OF MADISON
"Annuntio Vobis Gaudium Magnum" - "I Bring You News of Great Joy." These were the words recently proclaimed by the cardinal at the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome as he announced the election of Cardinal Josef Ratzinger as Pope Benedict XVI.
Likewise, I echo these words in proclaiming the ordination to the priesthood of Rev. Mr. Michael Radowicz and Rev. Mr. Eric Sternberg, our two fourth-year seminarians. It is a year of great joy for our Diocese of Madison.
Michael and Eric will be ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Robert Morlino at the 7:30 p.m. Ordination Mass at St. Aloysius Church in Sauk City, Wisconsin, on Friday, May 27th. It is particularly poignant that in this Year of the Eucharist we are able to celebrate the ordination of these two young men on the weekend of the Feast of Corpus Christi. The priesthood and the Eucharist are intimately linked, for there is no Eucharist without the priesthood.
As we approach this great event for our diocese, we reflect on Pope Benedict XVI's words from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica after his election to the papacy, "[I am] a simple, humble worker in the vineyard of the Lord. I am consoled by the fact that the Lord can work and act even through insufficient instruments, and I especially entrust myself to your prayers. In the joy of the risen Lord, and trusting in his permanent help, we go forward. The Lord will help us, and Mary his most holy mother is on our side."
In this season of ordinations and anniversary of ordinations, Michael and Eric as ordinandi and all of the priests in the Diocese of Madison naturally reflect on the gift of priesthood and how God uses us as imperfect instruments in His vineyard.
I want to take this opportunity to thank those who have been involved in Michael and Eric's formation for the priesthood: our bishops and priests, the previous directors and previous and current staff in the Office of Vocations, the faculty and staff at Mundelein Seminary, the families and friends of Michael and Eric, and all the others in our diocese who are too numerous to mention.
I especially wish to thank those involved in Eucharistic Adoration for Vocations. The Serra Clubs, parishioners throughout the diocese, and many others have been praying before
Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament for our seminarians and for an increase in vocations. These prayers are being answered.
In November, our diocese will be honored to receive a traveling monstrance blessed by the late Pope John Paul II specifically to encourage prayer before the Eucharist for vocations around the world. The monstrance will be in our diocese from November 18th through
November 23rd.
In conclusion, I echo to Michael and Eric the sentiments that Msgr. Paul Swain conveyed to me and the other men at our ordination in 2001. From his article as Director of Vocations, he reflected, "May it be for them a day of awe, joy, and humility. And may they have many years of happy ministry as priests, always remembering that to be a priest is a special privilege and a grave responsibility." Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.
