Priests' assembly

The Bishop:
A Herald of Faith

Bishop
William H. Bullock

The Priests' Assembly is an annual event since 1980. It is a time when all priests of the Diocese gather for prayer, instruction, and dialogue on a current topic and simply a time to enjoy each other's company.

The Priests' Assembly grew out of an Emmaus movement designed to bolster the spiritual lives of our priests. It is as one might well realize based on the Scripture story of the "Road to Emmaus" (Lk 24:13-35).

"As Jesus walked with the disciples on the road to Emmaus many discussions ensued about Jesus, his Resurrection, what had become of him, and what would happen to the disciples."

An Emmaus walk
with Jesus

As Jesus walked with the disciples on the road to Emmaus, many discussions ensued about Jesus, his Resurrection, what had become of him, and what would happen to the disciples.

The format or practice among several priest groups formed from the Emmaus Program, usually five to seven in number, is to select a meeting date with an overnight so that after a good night's rest the priests are ready to share their faith, pastoral experiences, and dialogue about how they may grow in their spiritual lives.

Many meet monthly. The result has been positive and the Diocese of Madison is the beneficiary of their prayer and meetings.

Monsignor Frank Bognanno of the Des Moines Diocese was a catalyst and promoter of the Emmaus Program and helped us to establish it here in the Diocese of Madison. He was back for my anniversary celebration on September 29th and is scheduled to preach our Priests' Retreat Nov. 10-14, 2002.

Growing out of the 1980 Emmaus Program was the Fall Priests' Assembly. It began modestly with a day and a half; in 1993 we extended it and now it runs from Sunday evening to Wednesday noon.

Topics are selected and presenters recruited by Bishop George Wirz and the Priests Continuing Education and Formation Committee. They have done splendid work and we stand in both awe at their ingenuity and with appreciation for their efforts each year.

General Instruction of the Roman Missal

This past Oct. 6-9 the topic was The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM). As you can appreciate, directives and documents develop as new needs surface - thus the new decree directed at implementation of celebration of the Mass and sacraments.

To view changes as merely rubrical would be to short-change the whole purpose. The new General Instruction of the Roman Missal is aimed at furthering the Vatican II Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy and updating ways in which we can more prayerfully celebrate and mystically embrace the mystery of our salvation - the Most Holy Eucharist.

It belongs to each diocesan bishop to see that the decree is implemented. Phases of implementation have already begun and more are yet to be programmed among parish liturgy committees.

Dr. Patrick Gorman, director of the Office of Worship, will help oversee the implementation process. I thank the priests and parish liturgy committees for their cooperation.

I will, in future columns, devote more time to amplify some aspects of it.

Center board will strengthen outreach, service, personal witness of our diocese

The Church of the twenty-first century will be, as it has always been a Church of many cultures, languages and traditions, yet simultaneously one, as God is one - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - unity in Diversity (USCCB, Welcoming the Stranger Among Us: Unity in Diversity).

The new concept of our Catholic Multicultural Center is born out of the needs of the day. Many decades ago St. Martin House was designed to care for the African-Americans and Centro Guadalupano for Latinos. Emerging quickly are Asian populations. For example, recent census statistics show that statewide Asians number two percent of the total population and Hispanics four percent (of a total state population of nearly five million), while African-Americans comprise six percent and whites 89 percent. In Dane County, Asians, Hispanics, and African-Americans are about equal at three to four percent each.

We are building on the good record and provisions made by pioneers of years ago. We now need new pioneers to develop the multicultural concept prevalent today.

The Catholic Multicultural Center, through its roots in Catholic faith and teaching, will be a unique contribution to our diocesan and civic community. The work of the board reflects the Catholic identity and mission that we each are called to live. The mission of the Catholic Multicultural Center reflects the words of Vatican II: the Church "is at once a sign and safeguard of the transcendent dimension of the human person."

The board will provide leadership and vision for the Center and guide its policies as a truly Catholic outreach effort. The board reports to the Bishop of Madison and will relate primarily to the Catholic Multicultural Center administrator, Mr. Mark Brinkmoeller.

The Catholic Multicultural Center (CMC) Board provides vision, leadership, and support for work and mission of the CMC to reach out to a broad range of ethnic and racial groups in the greater Madison community in providing pastoral care, advocacy, social service, and leadership development.

As Bishop of Madison, I hold our efforts in the establishment of the Catholic Multicultural Center to be one of our highest priorities. I ask God to bless the many donors, who are making it possible, and the many workers and volunteers. We will continually refine our vision in response to the many needs of the new millennium.

For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we are all given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:13).
