Sunday, Oct. 27, 6 p.m., WKOW (ABC) - "A Bug's Life" (1998). Vividly animated tale of a spunky ant (voice of Dave Foley) who rounds up several performing circus bugs, mistaking them for warriors needed to defend his endangered ant colony against marauding grasshoppers. Directed by John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton, the animation and pacing are outstanding but young children may find the intensity of the menace quite upsetting. Some scenes of physical abuse and verbal intimidation. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification of the theatrical version was A-II - adults and adolescents. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was G - general audiences.
Sunday, Oct. 27, 8:30 p.m., WYOU (cable) - "Christopher Closeup: Golden Anniversary, Part 2." Continuing a look back at 50 years of Christopher Closeup television. Includes clips with Joe Garagiola, Cesar Chavez, LeVar Burton, Dom DeLuise, and others.
Sunday, Oct. 27, 9 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "Frontier House: 'Til Death Do Us Part." Three contemporary American families face 19th-century life in the Montana wilderness in this six-part 'hands-on history' series. Chosen from more than 5,000 applications, the Glenn family of Tennessee, the Clue family of California, and the Brooks family of Massachusetts live for six months as 1880s homesteaders, with only the tools and technology of the period at their disposal. Throughout their historic adventure, the cameras roll, revealing the families' trials, triumphs, simple pleasures and daily rigors. In this episode, the modern day pioneers begin to settle in after six weeks and prepare for a frontier wedding.
Tuesday, Oct. 29, 10 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "National Geographic: Inside the Vatican." Exploring the Vatican's halls beyond the tourist attractions.
Saturday, Nov. 2, 7 p.m., Pax (cable) - "The Candidate" (1972). Robert Redford stars in the title role as a California lawyer who finds himself in the middle of a hot race for U.S. senator. Director Michael Ritchie, working with an excellent cast and a literate script, has constructed a fast-paced, cool, and very slick movie about the process of electing a candidate for major office. How power politics and the hard sell work, as seen from the inside, is all laid bare in this realistic and frequently quite funny political satire. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification of the theatrical version was A-III - adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was PG - parental guidance suggested.
