St. Raphael Cathedral Fire: One Year Later

photo of clock on St. Raphael Cathedral spire in Madison

The hands on the clock of St. Raphael Cathedral in Madison still say 5:38, the time the power was cut on the morning of March 14, 2005. That's when a fire allegedly set by an arsonist severely damaged the 150-year-old church. This week's print edition of the Catholic Herald features photos and articles about the cathedral fire; a year in review; comments from Msgr. Paul J. Swain, cathedral rector and Bishop Robert C. Morlino; an editorial by Mary Uhler; and interviews with cathedral parishioners. For links to Bishop Morlino's columns on the cathedral, see the Articles on St. Raphael Cathedral page. Marriage amendment:
Approved for fall ballot

MADISON -- Wisconsin voters will decide this November whether to pass a constitutional amendment defining marriage as "between one man and one woman," after the state Assembly voted 62-31 to pass the amendment February 28.

Amendment question

To appear on the fall ballot:

Question 1: Marriage. Shall section 13 of article XIII of the constitution be created to provide that only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state and that a legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized in this state?

Co-authored by state Sen. Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) and Assembly Rep. Mark Gundrum (R-New Berlin), the amendment both defines marriage and prohibits the recognition of a "legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage."

If passed, Wisconsin will join 19 other states defining marriage in their constitutions. Six other states currently have amendments on the ballot this year.   Full story ...
