Bishop Morlino: Worship presence of Christ in Eucharist with joy and gratitude
By Sarah Baldwin
CATHOLIC HERALD STAFF
(See also front-page photo and sidebar.)
MADISON -- Bishop Robert C. Morlino presided at a Mass celebrated at St. Maria Goretti Church in Madison on the Feast of Corpus Christi, May 29.
In his homily, Bishop Morlino discussed the topic of gratitude, noting that the word "Eucharist" itself means gratitude or thanksgiving.
He said, "On Friday I had the gift of the deepest gratitude I ever felt in my whole life.
It's a year of gratitude after my heart surgery, gratitude to be here and be well. I'm grateful to my caregivers. I'm grateful to Bishop Bullock and Bishop Wirz for picking up the slack. The Lord made me more grateful for my parents and my family than I ever have been. I'm more grateful for the priesthood, grateful for the office of bishop."
Sometimes if people are bored at Mass or under an obligation to be there, they come late and leave early, he said. The reason it happens is because "we don't come here with an attitude of gratitude. We think about things that are wrong when we come here. If I don't come here with attitude of gratitude, I'm not a disciple of Jesus Christ." We should come here thankful so we leave even more thankful, he said.
"Take a walk with Jesus, called a Eucharistic procession. Take a walk from the sacrifice of the altar and come back and worship the presence of Christ in the Eucharist," said the bishop.
"The Eucharist has its source in the sacrifice of the Mass. If a Christian believes in God and they never pray, that's got to be a sin. If Christ is truly present in the Eucharist, how could I not spend my time adoring Christ in the Eucharist? If I never spend time with him, that's got to be a sin."
We are grateful for our salvation in Christ, he said. We are more grateful for the possibility of heaven than for anything else.
"Lastly, how do we feel when we're grateful? We feel joyful," noted Bishop Morlino. Therefore, joy should be the mark of all followers of Christ.
