Author at Edgewood
MADISON -- Patricia Monaghan, author of The Red-Haired Girl from the Bog, will bring the Celtic spirit to life at Edgewood College, 1000 Edgewood College Dr., on Monday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Anderson Auditorium, Predolin Humanities Center.
The free talk will be followed by a book signing and reception. This presentation will appeal to people interested in Irish heritage and those interested in travel, storytelling, care of the land, and spiritual traditions.

Play at Edgewood High
MADISON -- Brighton Beach Memoirs will be presented by the Edgewood High School Drama Department on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Nov. 18, 19, and 20, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. in the Sr. Kathleen O'Connell Auditorium, 2219 Monroe St.
Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs is one of his most respected plays, winning the New York Drama Critics Circle Prize for Best Play.
Tickets are $10 for reserved seating and $8 for general admission. To order, call Edgewood High School at 608-257-1023.
Concert at Sacred Heart
REEDSBURG -- Sacred Heart Catholic Church Choirs will present a concert of liturgical music titled "St. Cecilia Sing" on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m.
It will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 624 N. Willow St., Reedsburg. There is no admission charge.
The Sacred Heart Choirs will also be joined by members of St. Cecilia Parish in Wisconsin Dells.

Film screening
MADISON -- Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) and the Urban League of Greater Madison invite members of the community to attend a film screening and facilitated discussion forum at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at the Catholic Multicultural Center, 1862 Beld St., Madison.
Following the screening of the Independent Lens film Refugee, attendees may share their thoughts and viewpoints about the film's subject matter in a facilitated discussion forum.
Jefferson holiday shows
JEFFERSON -- The Council for the Performing Arts presents The Many Moods of Christmas with Dallas Brass on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 7:30 p.m. and The Dutton
Family Christmas Special on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m. Both shows are at the Performing Arts Center, 700 W. Milwaukee St. in Jefferson.
The Dallas Brass' holiday show will feature many seasonal favorites. Tickets are $20 for adults, $19 for seniors, and $12 for students.
The Dutton Family's fourth return to Jefferson is brought back by popular demand. Tickets are $22 for adults, $20 for seniors, and $10 for students. A family pack, which includes two adult tickets and up to four student tickets, is available for $60.

California-based installation and mixed-media artist Flo Oy Wong uses photographs, rice sacks, rice, beads, sequins, and suitcases to create art from her life as a first-generation American of Chinese descent. Her visual stories of ancestry, identity, and culture focus on the little-known drama of ordinary people-her parents, her husband, and herself-who are an integral part of the United States of America.

"My paintings express the dimensions, the quirks, the many facets I detect in a subject. I rely on pastels and acrylic paint, but I incorporate whatever other materials help me convey the traits I think are worth noticing, celebrating, even puzzling over. Sheep's wool, pieces of fabric, gravel, newspaper...these are some of the materials that I combine with pastels in order to draw attention to my subject. What I am after is a forceful expression of the profound connection I feel to another person, an idea, or a dimension of my life. My hope is that the viewers will feel that connection just as powerfully."

Much like a carpenter who doesn't try to disguise the fact that he works with wood, I am not trying to hide the fact that what I am presenting is paint on canvas."

In 1998 Matthew Shepherd was kidnapped, beaten, and left to die tied to a fence outside Laramie, Wyo., because he was gay. In response to this hate crime, the Tectonic Theater Project conducted interviews with the community and created this deeply moving theatrical collage, which explores the depths of hate and fear and the heights of compassion and community.
