Edgewood band: Concert to mark 10-year anniversary
MADISON -- The Edgewood College concert series continues with the Edgewood Campus-Community Band performing a 10-year anniversary/alumni concert on Sunday, Oct. 24, at 2:30 p.m. in the St. Joseph Chapel in Regina Hall, 1000 Edgewood College Dr.
Julie Dunbar is the conductor. The program includes works performed throughout the 10-year history of the band program at Edgewood, including pieces by Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughn Williams, Eric Whitacre, Charles Ives, Johan de Meij, and more.
The Edgewood College Campus-Community Band was established in the fall of 1994 by Dunbar. This auditioned group includes Edgewood College and University of Wisconsin-Madison students as well as musicians from the Madison community. Along with providing an additional performing opportunity for Edgewood students, a major goal of the organization is to provide an opportunity for instrumentalists in the Madison area to continue to perform challenging literature beyond their collegiate years.
The band performs four on-campus concerts per year and additionally performs at local nursing homes and retirement centers, as well as at local middle schools and high schools. In addition, the band has raised thousands of dollars for the Luke House Community Meal program via freewill offerings at their concerts.
Tickets are $4 for general admission and $2 with Edgewood ID. They are available at the door. For information, call 608-663-3400.
Film screening, forum to be held Oct. 21
MADISON -- Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) and the Urban League of Greater Madison invite members of the community to attend a film screening and facilitated discussion forum at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at the Catholic Multicultural Center, 1862 Beld St., Madison.
Following the screening of With All Deliberate Speed: The Legacy of Brown V. Board, attendees are invited to share their thoughts and viewpoints about the film's subject matter in a facilitated discussion forum.

"From the time I became interested in clay, I was drawn to wood firing. This attraction led me through the States and Europe before I settled outside Madison in Cambridge, Wis. I bring to the work in this exhibition 14 years of production work and close to 20 years of firing wood kilns. For me, classic form 'caressed' by the sensuous touch of the flame creates objects that are an inviting expression of the four elements."

California-based installation and mixed-media artist Flo Oy Wong uses photographs, rice sacks, rice, beads, sequins, and suitcases to create art from her life as a first-generation American of Chinese descent. Her visual stories of ancestry, identity, and culture focus on the little-known drama of ordinary people-her parents, her husband, and herself-who are an integral part of the United States of America.

"My paintings express the dimensions, the quirks, the many facets I detect in a subject. I rely on pastels and acrylic paint, but I incorporate whatever other materials help me convey the traits I think are worth noticing, celebrating, even puzzling over. Sheep's wool, pieces of fabric, gravel, newspaper...these are some of the materials that I combine with pastels in order to draw attention to my subject. What I am after is a forceful expression of the profound connection I feel to another person, an idea, or a dimension of my life. My hope is that the viewers will feel that connection just as powerfully."
