Edgewood College Choral concert

MADISON -- The Edgewood College Music Department presents the Edgewood College 2004 Spring Choral Concert on Sunday, March 28, at 2:30 p.m.

The concert will feature the Edgewood Chamber Singers, under the direction of Joseph Testa, and Women's Choir, under the direction of Kathleen Otterson.

The concert is free and open to the general public. For additional information about concerts at Edgewood College, call the music department at 608-663-2845.


St. Bernard Players to hold auditions

MADISON -- St. Bernard Players announces its upcoming summer musical Annie based on the book by Thomas Meehan with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin.

The audition date is May 17 at 6 p.m. with a callback date if necessary on May 18. Auditions will be in the parish center.

Those auditioning should bring 16 bars of an up-tempo song and be prepared to read from the script and learn a short dance. Show dates are July 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, and possibly 18.

Also needed are a costume designer and people to help with backstage responsibilities.

Sunday Afternoon Live

MADISON -- Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem welcomes Uri Vardi, cello; Isabella Lippi, violin; Catherine Kautsky, piano; and Amitai Vardi, clarinet, on Sunday, March 28, at 12:30 p.m. in Brittingham Gallery III at the Elvehjem Museum of Art.

This group of artists from the Madison area will perform two trios by Johannes Brahms, the Trio in C Minor, Op. 101, and the Clarinet Trio in A, Op. 114. Uri and Amitai Vardi will perform Concert Duos for Clarinet and Cello, by Jan Radzynski, written for them in 2004.

There will be a reception after the performance; a free docent-led tour of the Elvehjem Museum begins at 2 p.m.

Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem is a free weekly chamber music series presented by the Elvehjem Museum of Art and Wisconsin Public Radio, with the cooperation of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music.

The series, hosted by music commentator Lori Skelton, is broadcast live on Wisconsin Public Radio stations, including WERN, 88.7, Madison.


Oakwood Chamber Players spring concert

MADISON -- The Oakwood Chamber Players present their Spring Soiree concerts on Friday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m. at First Unitarian Society, 900 University Bay Dr., and on Saturday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m. at Oakwood Village West Auditorium, 6209 Mineral Point Rd.

The concerts will feature Hummel's Military Septet featuring flute, clarinet, trumpet, violin, cello, bass, and piano; Foote's Three Pieces featuring flute, oboe, and cello; Pergolesi's Sonata #4 featuring trumpet, horn, and bass, and deFalla's Ritual Fire Dance featuring string quartet and piano.

Guest artists are Laura Burns, violin; Janse Vincent, viola; Benjamin Shapira, cello; John Aley, trumpet; and Jessica Johnson, piano.

Individual tickets are $12 for adult; $8 for senior citizen; and $5 for student. For tickets or additional information, call 608-230-4316.

Monday, March 29, 8 p.m., WHA (PBS) -- The New Americans. Debut of a seven-part documentary series which follows the journey of new immigrants and refugees as they travel from their homelands and begin life in the United States, covering their first three years.

Thursday, April 1, 8 p.m., WHA (PBS) -- "Ghosts of Rwanda." A Frontline documentary on the 10th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide chronicles the social, political, and diplomatic failures that enabled the slaughter of 800,000 people to go basically unchallenged by the global community.

Friday, April 2, 3:30 p.m., EWTN (cable) -- Hermie: A Common Caterpillar. This is a simple story of profound truth that teaches how God loves you just the way you are and that you are indeed truly special. Featuring the voices of Tim Conway and Don Knotts. Repeats 8:30 a.m. April 3.

Friday, April 2, 7 p.m., A&E (cable) -- Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001). Visually alluring World War II drama set during the Italian occupation of Greece in which an Italian officer (Nicolas Cage) falls in love with a Grecian beauty (Penelope Cruz), forcing him to decide between allegiance and love. Several rather graphic battle scenes, a sexual encounter, some nudity, and fleeting rough language. The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification of the theatrical version was A-IV - adults, with reservations. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was R - restricted.
