Children's Theatre

JEFFERSON -- On Monday, Nov. 17, the Council for the Performing Arts invites students in grades K-12 to audition for Hansel and Gretel with Missoula Children's Theatre.

Auditions will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center located at the Jefferson High School, 700 W. Milwaukee St. There are roles for young people of all ages and abilities. Approximately 60 area children will be cast.

Rehearsals will be every day from 4 to 6 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. in the Jefferson High School Auditorium. Although not all cast members will be needed at every session, those auditioning must have a clear schedule for the entire week and be able to attend all rehearsals for their role. The first rehearsal for those children with larger roles begins 30 minutes after the auditions.

The performances will be held on Friday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center. Those in the cast must be available for all scheduled performances.

Tickets for Hansel and Gretel are $11 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $6 for students. A family package is also available (two adults and up to four children) for $35. They are available by calling the council office at 920-674-2179.

Sunday Afternoon Live

MADISON -- Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem welcomes Klara Fenyö Bahcall, violin, with Elena Abend, piano, Sunday, Nov. 16, at 12:30 p.m. in Brittingham Gallery III at the Elvehjem Museum of Art.

Originally from Budapest, Hungary, Bahcall is on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Her collaborator Abend was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and is a chamber musician and soloist from the Milwaukee area. The duo will perform two works for violin and piano by Carl Goldmark: Suite for Violin and Piano, Op. 11 and Op. 43.

There will be a reception after the performance; a free docent-led tour of the Elvehjem Museum begins at 2 p.m.

Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem is a free weekly chamber music series presented by the Elvehjem Museum of Art and Wisconsin Public Radio, with the cooperation of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music.

The series, hosted by music commentator Lori Skelton, is broadcast live on Wisconsin Public Radio stations, including WERN, 88.7, Madison.

Orchestra performance

MADISON -- The Edgewood College Music Department will present the Edgewood Chamber Orchestra in concert on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 2:30 p.m. in the St. Joseph Chapel, Regina Hall, 1000 Edgewood College Dr.

The Chamber Orchestra is under the direction of Blake Walter. Works to be performed include Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutti Overture and Symphony No. 31 in D major, K. 297 "Paris," as well as Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37, featuring piano soloist, Gloria Chuang.

Tickets will be available at the door: $4 general admission, free with Edgewood ID. For information on Edgewood College music events, contact the music department at 608-663-2845.

Celtic harp music CD to be released

MADISON -- A CD release party to celebrate Rolliana Scheckler's new Dawning of the Day CD will be held Saturday, Nov. 15, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Olbrich Botanical Gardens-Evuje Commons, 3330 Atwood Ave.

Scheckler plays solo Celtic harp on her first CD in eight years. Over 58 minutes long, it has 14 tracks which feature music from Scotland, Ireland, and Cornwall, most arranged by the performer.

The CD, released on the HarpSinger label, was recorded at Listening Point in Ellison Bay, Door County, Wis. The Dawning of the Day CD will be played throughout the party and may be purchased there at reduced party-only pricing.

Scheckler is a professional harper and harpsinger, performer, teacher, and clinician. She earned her Bachelor of Music Degree in applied voice from UW-Madison School of Music.

For many years, she taught classical singing and Celtic harp both from her private studio and at Edgewood College. She continues to teach Celtic harp and harpsong privately and in various workshops.

Following are some theatrical movies and television programs of note. This information is being provided to assist people in making viewing choices.

Sunday, Nov. 16, 7 a.m., WISC (CBS) -- Mass. Celebrated by Msgr. Thomas Campion, sponsored by Apostolate to the Handicapped.

Sunday, Nov. 16, 8 p.m., WHA (PBS) -- Coyote Waits. In this drama, Navajo tribal policemen Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn team up again to satisfy themselves that an accused cop killer in custody is truly the guilty party. The telefilm is the second - after Skinwalkers - to be adapted from popular author Tony Hillerman's Native American police thrillers. The quality is nearly as high as its excellent predecessor. The plot takes interesting detours with an unpredictable and satisfying finale. For those with an appetite for intelligent drama with nuanced acting, this should fit the bill, and is fine for all but small children. Repeats 8 p.m. Nov. 19.

Sunday, Nov. 16, 8:30 p.m., WYOU (cable) -- Christopher Close-Up: "Choose to Stay." Salome Thomas-EL, a school principal from Philadelphia, describes his education and mentoring programs that have made a difference in the lives of hundreds of inner city children.

Monday, Nov. 17-Friday, Nov. 21, 3:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., EWTN (cable) -- Awesome Bible Adventures. Noah, Moses, David, and Joshua are among the biblical characters young viewers will meet in this new series.

Thursday, Nov. 20, 7:30 p.m., WHA (PBS) -- The Wisconsin Gardener. In this program, gourds, willow branches, wood, and dried leaves and flowers from Wisconsin's landscapes and gardens mix with a little ingenuity to create seasonal gifts. Repeats 5:30 p.m. Dec. 14.
