'Sunday Afternoon Live'
features brass

MADISON -- "Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem" welcomes the Wisconsin Brass Quintet with guest artists Mimi Fulmer, soprano ,and Bruce Gladstone, tenor, on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 12:30 p.m. in Brittingham Gallery III.

The singers and brass will join forces performing songs of Stephen Foster, Michael Tilson Thomas, Dan Welcher, and Leonard Bernstein.

There will be a reception after the performance; a free docent-led tour of the Elvehjem Museum begins at 2 p.m.

"Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem" is a free weekly chamber music series presented by the Elvehjem Museum of Art and Wisconsin Public Radio, with the cooperation of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music. The series, hosted by music commentator Lori Skelton, is broadcast live on Wisconsin Public Radio stations, including WERN, 88.7, Madison

Gallery invites artists to submit work

MADISON -- The DeRicci Gallery at Edgewood College invites artists to submit work in any media to be considered for exhibition during the 2003-2004 academic year.

Individual artists and groups should send 10 to 20 slides, curriculum vitae, a short artist statement or exhibition proposal, and a stamped, self-addressed envelope for return of materials to: Gallery Director, DeRicci Gallery, Edgewood College, 1000 Edgewood College Dr., Madison, WI 53711.

The deadline of submission is Jan. 31.

Chamber Choir presents concert

MADISON -- The Wisconsin Chamber Choir will present Bach's Christmas Oratorio," parts one to three, with a 21-piece orchestra at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15, at Luther Memorial Church, University Ave. at Mills St.

Music director is Gary McKercher. The concert will feature Jackie Latrop, soprano; Cheryl Bensman-Rowe, mezzo-soprano; Joel Burcham, tenor; and William Rosholt, bass.

General admission is $15 and $10 for students. Advance tickets are available at Ward Brodt Music Hall and Madison Church Supply or at the door.

Programs at Madison Children's Museum

MADISON -- Madison Children's Museum, 101 State St., will present several winter programs:

• "Holiday Ornaments" on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14 and 15, 2 to 3 p.m.

• "Science Dabblers" on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2:30 to 3 p.m.

• "Winter Wonderlands" on Thursday, Dec. 26, 11 a.m. to 12 noon.

• "Snowflake Art" - on Friday, Dec 27, 2 to 3 p.m.

All programs are free with museum admission. For more information, call 608-256-6445.

'Holiday in the Woods' at education center

WISCONSIN DELLS -- Upham Woods 4-H Environmental Education Center, N194 County Road N., will present "Holiday in the Woods" Saturday, Dec. 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It will feature an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast with Santa and other family-friendly activities, including birdfeeder making, cookie decorating, a coloring contest, and winter hiking along the Wisconsin River.

The breakfast is $5 for adults and $3 for children.

Arboretum hosts winter events

MADISON -- The University of Wisconsin Arboretum, 1207 Seminole Hwy., will host several winter programs.

"Who's Awake and Who's Asleep: The Winter Lives of Arboretum Animals" on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Arboretum also offers guided hikes every Sunday at 1 to 2:30 p.m. from Dec. 15 to Jan. 26.

Jewish women exhibit at museum

MADISON -- The Wisconsin Historical Museum, located at 30 N. Carroll St. on the Capitol Square in Madison, will host the Minnesota Historical Society's traveling exhibit, "Unpacking on the Prairie: Jewish Women in the Upper Midwest," from Dec. 16 through March 1.

The exhibit explores the experiences of immigrant Jewish women and how they interacted with their neighbors, maintained Jewish homes, and created Jewish communities.

"Unpacking on the Prairie" will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission to the museum is free, but there is a suggested donation of $4 for adults, $3 for children under 18, and $10 for families. For more information, call 608-264-6555.

Saturday, Dec. 14, 9 a.m., EWTN (cable) - "I Was There, The Holy Mass." A reverent animated account of a young man's realization of the meaning of the Mass for him.

Saturday, Dec. 14, 5 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "Lawrence Welk: Christmas." The Lennon Sisters, Bobby Burgess, Elaine Balden, and Julie Hovis spread the warmth of a Christmas spent at home.

Sunday, Dec. 15, 7 a.m., WISC (CBS) - "Mass." Celebrated by Msgr. Thomas Campion, sponsored by Apostolate to the Handicapped.

Sunday, Dec. 15, 10 a.m., EWTN (cable) - "Advent Reflections: Part 3." The Advent Season is the beginning of the church's liturgical year. Join Bishop William Lori, from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, for a series of weekly reflections in preparation for the joyous Birth of Our Lord. Repeats 1 a.m. Dec. 18 and 9:30 p.m. Dec. 20.

Sunday, Dec. 15, 12:30 p.m., EWTN (cable) - "Baroque Christmas Concert." Repeats 2 a.m. Dec. 21 and 5 p.m. Dec. 26.

Sunday, Dec. 15, 6 p.m., EWTN (cable) - "The Crippled Lamb." Based on the popular children's book, this animated tale tells the story of Joshua, a crippled lamb who, because of his handicap, was left in a stable in Bethlehem and got to play a part in the birth of Jesus. Repeats 3:30 p.m. Dec. 27.

Sunday, Dec. 15, 6:30 p.m., EWTN (cable) - "The First Christmas." This colorful animated production tells the traditional story of the birth of Jesus. Witness the encounter with the innkeeper who has no rooms, but provides shelter in a stable where Mary gives birth. Follow the Magi as they follow the star that led them to the Baby Jesus. Narrated by Christopher Plummer.

Sunday, Dec. 15, 8 p.m., Travel (cable) - "New Zealand: The Royal Tour." The country's prime minister, Helen Clark, traverses the lush rainforests, alpine peaks, and steep canyons of the land where the "Lord of the Rings" movie trilogy was filmed.

Sunday, Dec. 15, 8 p.m., WMTV (NBC) - "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" (1989). In the third Griswold family saga, dizzy dad Clark (Chevy Chase) aims to create an old-fashioned Christmas at home despite his clumsy pratfalls and short-fuse patience pushed to the limit by wife (Beverly D'Angelo), kids, in-laws, and assorted relatives. Director Jeremiah S. Chechik keeps the gags moving quickly past the double entendres and gets some laughs from Clark's bumbling attempts to enjoy Christmas. Some rough language laced with vulgarities and sexual innuendoes. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification is A-III - adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is PG - parental guidance suggested.

Sunday, Dec. 15, 8:30 p.m., WYOU (cable) - "Christopher Closeup: Michael the Visitor." Based on the Tolstoy classic and narrated by Stockard Channing, this clay animation film is a special holiday presentation of Christopher Closeup.

Monday-Tuesday, Dec. 16-17, 8 p.m. each night, TLC (cable) - "Human Instinct." Four-part probe of instinctive behavior focuses on survival, desire, the competitive drive, and heroism.

Tuesday, Dec. 17, 7 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "Teen Connection." This episode, the 50th in the series, deals with sexual abuse. Latest figures on reported and substantiated annual child sexual assault cases in Wisconsin is 4,949. A panel on the live call-in program will include three teen sexual assault victims and Jeanie Kurka Reimer, director of the Sexual Assault Center of Family Services in Brown County. Viewers may call 877-988-2888 during the broadcast.

Tuesday, Dec. 17, 8 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "Mississippi River: The Main Stream." Humorist Roy Blount Jr. journeys down the Mississippi River to rediscover his roots, search for the spirit of Mark Twain, and explore both this great liquid divide and what holds diverse Americans together.

Wednesday, Dec. 18, 3:30 p.m., EWTN (cable) - "The Chimes." This story by Charles Dickens is narrated by Derek Jacobi. On New Year's Eve, a poor messenger, Toby Veck, huddles in a church doorway waiting for work. Although his daughter soon informs him that she is to marry the blacksmith the next day, Toby wonders why he was born. He later saves a homeless man and his niece from jail and shelters them in his home. That night, Toby dreams that the Chimes show him what life would be like without hope or love. Repeats 3 p.m. Dec. 27 and 3:30 p.m. Dec. 31.

Thursday, Dec. 19, 3 p.m., EWTN (cable) - "Jacob's Gift." Based on the popular children's book, this story of a 12-year old carpentry student in Bethlehem tells the timeless Christmas story with a message for all - the greatest gift is one that's from the heart. Repeats 10 a.m. Dec. 21; 4:30 p.m. Dec. 25; 10 a.m. Dec. 28; 3:30 p.m. Dec. 30.
