'A Little Princess' play at Jefferson

JEFFERSON -- Do you remember the heart-warming movie "A Little Princess," starring Shirley Temple? The Council for the Performing Arts (CPA) will present ArtsPower's musical adaptation of the same story, entitled "A Little Princess Christmas," on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m.

Based on the classic novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, "A Little Princess Christmas" tells the story of young Sara Crewe. She is the apple of her father's eye, but he must leave for war. Sara is sent to Miss Minchin's Seminary for Young Ladies in London and misses her father terribly.

This performance will take place at the Performing Arts Center, located at Jefferson High School, 700 W. Milwaukee St.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $11 for seniors, and $6 for students. A family package is also available at $35 (two adults and up to four students). Tickets are available by phone with Visa or MasterCard by calling the CPA at 920-674-2179.

Jazz at 'Tunes at Monona Terrace'

MADISON -- Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center will host the big band, All That Jazz, for a concert as part of "Tunes at Monona Terrace" on Wednesday, Nov. 20.

Free and open to the public, the concert will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Exhibition Hall on Level 1. Sandwiches, popcorn, beer, wine, and soft drinks are available for purchase beginning at 5 p.m.

Monona Terrace is located at One John Nolen Dr. Parking is available in the Monona Terrace parking ramp for a $3 fee. For further information call 608-261-4000 or TTY 608-261-4150.

Chamber orchestra concert

MADISON -- The Edgewood Chamber Orchestra will present its second concert in its 2002-03 concert season Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2:30 p.m. in the St. Joseph Chapel at Edgewood College.

Featured works include The Hebrides Overture by Mendelssohn, Pavane for a Dead Princess by Ravel, Symphony No. 63 by Haydn, and Respighi's Trittico Botticelliano.

General admission is $4, or free with Edgewood College ID. For more information contact Blake Walter at 608-663-2394.

'Sunday Afternoon Live'

MADISON -- "Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem" welcomes Rebekah Demaree, soprano; Timothy Lovelace; piano; and Ether Wang, piano, on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 12:30 p.m. in Brittingham Gallery III.

These UW-Platteville faculty members will perform works by American composers. There will be a reception after the performance; a free docent-led tour of the Elvehjem Museum begins at 2 p.m.

Theater Bus

MADISON -- Theater Bus for those over 60 has two Christmas outings planned.

Theater Bus will travel to the Christmas show at the Fireside in Ft. Atkinson on Thursday, Dec. 19. Lunch and transportation are included in the price of $63. For reservations call 608-257-0003 before Nov. 17 or until full.

Celebrate Christmas in Madison with a trip to the Memorial High School Planetarium, lunch at Quivey's Grove, a holiday tour of the Governor's Mansion, and on to Olbrich Gardens. All this included for $34 on Thursday, Dec. 12. For reservations call 608-257-0003 before Nov. 21 or until full.

Teddy Bear birthday party

MADISON -- Teddy Bears and their people are invited to a 100th birthday party at the Wisconsin Historical Museum, 30 N. Carroll St., celebrating the birth of the teddy bear in 1902.

The museum will host a party on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and repeat it from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Events include stories, music, history, identification clinic, and, of course, birthday cake.

The program is free and open to the public. Donations of teddy bears will be collected for the "Good Bears of the World" program, which distributes bears in the Madison area to those in need via police and fire departments, family crisis center, hospitals, and nursing homes.

Sunday, Nov. 17, 6 p.m., EWTN (cable) - "Journey to Holiness Youth Conference." Join EWTN "on location" at a youth conference in Sioux Falls, S.D., and listen to talks by Dr. Scott Hahn, Mark Berchem, and Pam Stenzel. Repeats noon Nov. 19 and 2 a.m. Nov. 22.

Sunday, Nov. 17, 8:30 p.m., WYOU (cable) - "Christopher Closeup: Facing Racism." Actress Hattie Winston (TV's Becker, The Electric Company) discusses the racism she's faced in her life, and efforts to expose children to African-American culture.

Tuesday, Nov. 19, 7 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "The Sinking City of Venice." This "Nova" program describes how Venice has always been a magical balancing act of land and sea, sitting as it does on salt marshes built at sea level.

Tuesday, Nov. 19, 9 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "Benjamin Franklin." Follow the story of Franklin's humble beginnings. Then join him in his 50s as he responds to the dispute between the American colonies and England. Part 2, 9 p.m. Nov. 20.

Wednesday, Nov. 20, 7 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "Secrets of the Dead: Titanic's Ghosts." Follow the cutting-edge forensic techniques of Dr. Ryan Parr and a team of scientists who attempt to identify 43 bodies from the Titanic disaster that have lain in unmarked graves in Nova Scotia for the past 90 years. Repeats 11:30 p.m. Nov. 21.

Saturday, Nov. 23, 7 p.m., Pax (cable) - "That's Entertainment!" (1974). Singing, dancing historical survey of the best of the MGM musicals charms the eye and ear with romantic fantasy. It was written, produced, and directed by Jack Haley Jr. The selection of excerpts from these musicals demonstrates effortlessly why their appeal endures from generation to generation. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification of the theatrical version was A-I - general patronage. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was G - general audiences.
