'Teen Connection' program to air

MADISON -- Wisconsin Public Television will air the season premiere of "Teen Connection" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15.

"Teens and Inhalants" will shed some light on the "silent epidemic" of using common household products such as glue, Freon from air conditioners, hair spray, felt-tip markers, and other items for purposes other than their intended use.

Laurie Culp of Sister Bay will be featured in the program. Last year, her 24-year-old son Aaron died of an overdose. He inhaled butane from a cartridge used to refill cigarette lighters and, Culp reports, it may have been the very first time he tried this method of getting high."

Viewers from around the state may participate in the live discussion by calling 877-988-2888. Trained volunteers will staff the phone banks, help some callers, and refer selected calls for on-air discussion.

'Sunday Afternoon Live'

MADISON -- "Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem" welcomes the Fine Arts Quartet, Sunday, Oct. 13, at 12:30 p.m. in Brittingham Gallery III.

The quartet, whose members are artists-in-residence at UW-Milwaukee, is among the few to have toured internationally since the end of World War II with few changes in personnel.

The quartet will play Evans' Quartet no. 1, Dohnányi's Quartet no. 1, and Brahms' Quartet no. 2.

There will be a reception after the performance; a free docent-led tour of the Elvehjem Museum begins at 2 p.m.

"Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem" is a free weekly chamber music series presented by the Elvehjem Museum of Art and Wisconsin Public Radio, with the cooperation of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music. The series, hosted by music commentator Lori Skelton, is broadcast live on Wisconsin Public Radio stations, including WERN, 88.7 Madison.

'Tunes at Monona Terrace'

MADISON -- Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center will feature John Chimes and the Natch'l Blues Band in concert as part of "Tunes at Monona Terrace" on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The concert is free and open to the public and will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Exhibition Hall on Level 1. Sandwiches, popcorn, beer, wine, and soft drinks are available for purchase beginning at 5 p.m.

Monona Terrace is located at One John Nolen Dr. Parking is available in the Monona Terrace parking ramp for a $3 fee. For further information call 608-261-4400 or TTY 608-261-4150.

Dane County Photo Show

MADISON -- The fourth annual historic Dane County Photo Show will be held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12 and 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at E.W. Parker Jewelers, 9 W. Main St. on the Capitol Square.

Sunday, Oct. 13, 7 a.m., WISC (CBS) - "Mass." Celebrated by Msgr. Thomas Campion, sponsored by Apostolate to the Handicapped.

Sunday, Oct. 13, 6 p.m., WKOW (ABC) - "Dr. Dolittle" (1998). Comedy clunker about a San Francisco physician (Eddie Murphy) whose life becomes complicated when he starts talking to animals but no one else can hear what they say to him. Director Betty Thomas treats the thin proceedings with bogus sentimentality while pursuing laughs from sophomoric vulgarities and crude invective. Much bathroom humor, coarse language, and several instances of profanity. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification of the theatrical version was A-III - adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was PG-13 - parents are strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.

Sunday, Oct. 13, 6:30 p.m., EWTN (cable) - "Crossing Rome." This video takes the viewer back to the first centuries of Christianity and the Early Church of Rome. It uncovers many historical and archaeological finds that show how the cross at Rome went from being a symbol of criminality to a sign of triumph and loving sacrifice. Repeats 12:30 p.m. Oct. 15.

Sunday, Oct. 13, 8 p.m., Pax (cable) - "Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye." Made-for-TV movie premiere of a fact-based series about a profoundly deaf woman (played by deaf actress Deanne Bray) who overcame the condition to join the FBI's elite surveillance team.

Sunday, Oct. 13, 8:30 p.m., WYOU (cable) - "Christopher Closeup: Violence in the Holy Land." Israeli Ambassador Alon Pinkas discusses the roots of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and efforts at peacemaking in the Middle East.

Tuesday, Oct. 15, 7 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "Teen Connection: Teens and Inhalants." Inhaling household items for a high is a dangerous practice. Hear from a teen who survived and a parent who lost a son to the practice. Viewers may join the live discussion by phoning 1-877-988-2888.

Tuesday, Oct. 15, 8 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "Scientific American Frontiers: Make Up Your Mind." "M*A*S*H" veteran Alan Alda hosts the 13th season of Scientific American Frontiers, which investigates a spectrum of scientific topics. This episode explores the part of the brain that decides what a person does every waking second of each day. Repeats 11:30 p.m. Oct. 21.

Wednesday, Oct. 16, 9:30 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "Great Performances." Tenors Victor Trent Cook, Rodrick Dixon, and Thomas Young perform everything from opera to blues, Broadway to gospel.
