With great joy in our hearts and deep gratitude to God we look forward to the ordination of three deacons at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2002, in the Bishop O'Donnell Holy Name Memorial Chapel at the Bishop O'Connor Catholic Pastoral Center. All three deacons are scheduled to be ordained priests on May 23, 2003. As it happens this year, all three men came to study and prepare for priesthood from the business world. I might add quickly - they were successful in business and had high quality accomplishments.
They are Jay Poster, Brian Wilk, and Diego Cuevas. While they held major secular positions of responsibility, God called them and they opted to give up possible careers in order to humbly pursue the life of a priest. This is not easy, yet they do it with a spirit of abandonment and deep trust in God. What a grace from God to our Diocese and what a generous response these men are making to God's call to become priests of Jesus Christ. I am bursting with pride and joy. I am pleased to hold them up before all of you in the Diocese as signs of hope for our future and signals from God that he is indeed blessing us in special ways. We work diligently, creatively, and prayerfully to obtain vocations to the priesthood including: Serra Club, Vocation's Directors, Teams, Southwest Vocations Club, Knights of Columbus, Parish Vocation Committees, and our monthly Midday Prayer for Vocations by our priests. Devoted lay persons and religious also are examples of the many persons who pray and work to promote vocations to the priesthood. I am so very grateful to them all. I thank all who have in any way aided, encouraged, and formed these men. Without your continued prayerful support and encouragement, this increase in vocations would not be possible. You do make a difference as you pray and make sacrifices. Our need for priests continues, as more and more of our currently active priests prepare for retirement. Do continue your prayer for vocations. Each day I pray this prayer for vocations. Please join our prayer for vocations to your own daily prayers.
Permanent DiaconateWe also have a large class of deacons preparing for ordination in 2004. These men with their wives have been in formation now for three years. Mrs. Kathleen (Kate) Wiskus is our director and reports that these men are of solid reputation and promise. So our future is bright and promising as these men undertake living out the call to proclaim the Gospel, preach, baptize, and in service be witnesses in the market place. The permanent diaconate, revived in the Church with Vatican II, complements the many dedicated lay persons and religious who serve in our parishes, agencies, and diocesan offices. Please continue your prayers, your efforts in behalf of asking God, the Harvest Master, to give us good people.
