Sunday, July 28, 6 p.m., WKOW (ABC) - "First Kid" (1996). Lightweight comedy in which a genial Secret Service agent (Sinbad) assigned to guard the president's 13-year-old son (Brock Pierce) spends his time building the neglected youngster's self-esteem by teaching him to box, dance, and be a regular kid. Directed by David Mickey Evans, the appealing story turns needlessly nasty at the end when a deranged individual sets out to shoot the boy. Some violence, deadly menace to a child, and fleeting nudity. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification of the theatrical version was A-II - adults and adolescents. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was PG - parental guidance suggested.

Tuesday, July 30, 9 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "Sweet Old Song." From the "P.O.V." series, a documentary about 91-year-old fiddler "Louie Bluie" Armstrong and his artistic partner, painter Barbara Ward.

Tuesday, July 30, 9:30 p.m., TBS (cable) - "Platoon" (1986). The Vietnam War as experienced by a raw recruit (Charlie Sheen) is evoked with relentless realism in scenes of battle and brutality in writer-director Oliver Stone's haunting reminiscence of its horrors and inhumanity. Its excessive violence, unrelenting profanity, and graphic depiction of representative atrocities are stomach-churning, but serve as a corrective to "Rambo"-style romanticizations of the war. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification of the theatrical version was A-IV - adults, with reservations. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was R - restricted.

Saturday, Aug. 3, 9 a.m., Hallmark (cable) - "The Muppet Movie" (1979). After a chance encounter with a Hollywood talent scout (Dom DeLuise), Kermit the Frog abandons his soggy swamp for a movie career, taking the entire Muppet crew on a heart-warming cross-country jaunt, but it is Miss Piggy who saves the day by getting Kermit his Hollywood audition. In their first appearance on the big screen, Jim Henson's Muppet characters seem right at home and director James Frawley's location filming gives them the world as a stage. Charming and delightful entertainment for all. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification of the theatrical version was A-I - general patronage. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was G - general audiences.
