SINSINAWA — Sister Genevieve Pinion, OP, died July 16, 2020, at St. Dominic Villa. Her religious name was Sister Mary Gertruda. The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, July 21, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Genevieve made her first religious profession as a Dominican Sister of Sinsinawa Aug. 5, 1942, and her perpetual profession Aug. 5, 1945. She taught music for 64 years. Sister Genevieve was an exceptionally skilled artist who understood how the musician and the instrument worked together to create the highest level of music. She studied under Mademoiselle Nadia Boulanger, one of the most revered teachers in the world. Sister Genevieve served in Wisconsin, Illinois, and the District of Columbia.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Genevieve taught music at the motherhouse, Sinsinawa, 1996-2011.
Sister Genevieve was born Oct. 12, 1922, in Marshfield, the daughter of Joseph and Gertrude (Felker) Pinion. Her parents and two sisters, Joan Lawrence and Mary Harry, preceded her in death. She is survived by two sisters, Gertrude Greey and Charlotte Sacks; nieces; nephews; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared 77 years of religious life.
