SINSINAWA — Sr. Mary Kathryn Guenther, OP, died March 4, 2017, at St. Dominic Villa. Her religious name was Sr. John Gualbert. The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, March 10, 2017, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Mary Kathryn made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1949, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1952. She taught for 24 years and served as principal for one year, activity director for seven years, and in pastoral ministries for 27 years. She served in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Mary Kathryn taught at St. Cecilia, Wisconsin Dells, 1965-1967, and served as pastoral associate at Sacred Heart Parish, Reedsburg, 1986-2008, where she continued to volunteer until 2010.
Sister Mary Kathryn was born Feb. 10, 1930, in Armour, S.D., the daughter of John C. and Gladys (Smith) Guenther. Her parents; a sister, Janette Hill; and two brothers, John W. Guenther and James Guenther, preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces, nephews, and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 67 years.
