(2005) Superior biopic about country singer Johnny Cash (a mesmerizing Joaquin Phoenix, who does his own singing). It traces the singer’s childhood marred by the accidental death of his older brother, and his father’s subsequent coldness, through an unfulfilling first marriage, and his budding romance with singer June Carter (Reese Witherspoon, who matches her co-star in the singing and acting departments), drug dependency and ultimate survival. Director James Mangold deftly balances the personal drama with plenty of good music, making for first-rate entertainment, though the touching romance between the married Cash and Carter -- despite cautious treatment by scriptwriter Gill Dennis -- is naggingly problematic from a basic moral, as well as Catholic, perspective. Some rough and crude language, ethnic slurs, scenes of domestic violence, drug and alcohol use, an extramarital relationship.  (A-III – adults)  (PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned) AMC (cable)
