Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit ( 7:00 pm - 9:33 pm )

(1993) Fair comedy sequel in which the Las Vegas singer (Whoopi Goldberg) is back in a nun’s habit, hoping to save a Catholic high school from closing by transforming a bunch of unruly students into a vibrant choir in time to win the all-state competition. Though lacking the novel premise of the original and off-kilter in its goofy depiction of several priests, director Bill Duke’s moderately amusing comedy stresses positive values for youngsters. Mild sexual innuendo, comic treatment of religious characters and an instance of profanity. (A-II -- adults and adolescents) (PG -- parental guidance suggested) Lifetime (cable)

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial ( 7:00 pm - 8:55 pm )

(1982) Ugly-duckling fable in which a boy (Henry Thomas) befriends a stranded alien creature from outer space and helps him return to his home. Director Steven Spielberg fashions an inspiring image of youthful innocence and courage in a story that some may find overly sentimental. Nevertheless, the childlike fantasy conveys some genuine emotion and a message of trust and peace that the family might enjoy sharing. (A-I -- general patronage) (PG -- parental guidance suggested) Cinemax (cable)

First Man ( 7:00 pm - 9:25 pm )

(2018) Splendid multidimensional profile of astronaut Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) charting the events that led to his becoming the commander of the 1969 Apollo 11 space mission and the first human being to walk on the Moon. In adapting James R. Hansen’s 2005 official biography, director Damien Chazelle melds an intimate portrait of the emotionally buttoned-up ex-naval aviator and engineer’s inner life, including his deep bond with his strong-willed wife, Janet (Claire Foy), with a look back at the sometimes tragic, ultimately triumphant race to reach the lunar surface. Despite the universally known outcome of the story, Chazelle and screenwriter Josh Singer successfully infuse their account with suspense by reminding viewers of the radical problems NASA had to overcome and the dangers Armstrong and his colleagues constantly had to face. Possibly acceptable for mature teens. Brief scatological material, a few profanities and milder oaths, a single rough and a handful of crude terms.  (A-III -- adults) (PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned) HBO (cable)

Lilies Of The Field ( 3:00 pm - 4:45 pm )

(1963) When an itinerant jack-of-all-trades (Sidney Poitier) stops to help a group of German nuns newly arrived in New Mexico, his cheerful generosity is disdained by the stern, demanding mother superior (Lilia Skala) until he builds them a chapel with the aid of the local Mexican-American community. Directed by Ralph Nelson, the movie’s simple little story of the triumph of faith coupled with good will has enormous charm in the winning performances of the two principals, some good-natured comedy and an infectious theme song that will leave viewers humming “Amen.” (A-I -- general patronage) TCM (cable)

2001: A Space Odyssey ( 8:00 am - 10:45 am )

(1968) Director Stanley Kubrick’s epic work, co-written with Arthur C. Clarke, is both science fiction and metaphysical poetry using an unconventional mixture of visuals and music to bridge humanity’s reconstructed past, identifiable present and projected future, all tied together by the recurring image of a monolith as symbol of a superhuman existence. The central narrative follows the struggle of two astronauts (Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood) to wrest control of their spacecraft from HAL, a talking computer (voice of Douglas Rain), on a half-billion-mile trip to Jupiter and the unknown. For young people and imaginative adults but too long, deep, and intense for children. (A-II -- adults and adolescents) (G -- general audiences) TCM (cable)

The King’s Speech ( 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm )

(2011) Stirring historical drama, set between the world wars, about the unlikely but fruitful relationship between the Duke of York (Colin Firth) -- second in line to the British crown -- and the eccentric speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush) under whose care he reluctantly places himself at the instigation of his loyal wife (Helena Bonham Carter) to overcome the stammer that hobbles his public speaking. This task becomes all the more urgent as the death of the duke’s father (Michael Gambon) and the abdication of his brother (Guy Pearce) propel the unwilling heir toward the throne. Weaving together the story of one of the modern era’s most successful royal marriages and the lesser-known tale of the friendship by which an unflappable commoner helped to heal the emotionally crippling childhood wounds underlying his princely client’s impediment, director Tom Hooper creates a luminous tapestry reinforced by finely spun performances and marred only by the loose threads of some offensive language. Two brief but intense outbursts of vulgarity, a couple of uses of profanity, a few crass terms, and a mildly irreverent joke. (A-III -- adults) (R -- restricted) Showtime (cable)

Enemy Of The State ( 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm )

(1998) Glossy political thriller in which a Georgetown lawyer (Will Smith) is being framed for murder by a corrupt government surveillance agent (Jon Voight) unless a mysterious former agent (Gene Hackman) can outsmart the operative at his own game. Tony Scott directs a relentlessly high-tech chase film that by stressing elaborate surveillance gizmos and tracking satellites fails to become emotionally involving. Sporadic violence, sexual references, some profanity, and intermittent rough language. (A-III -- adults) (R -- restricted) AMC (cable)

Ignatius Of Loyola: Soldier, Sinner, Saint ( 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm )

This biography recounts how the founder of the Jesuit Order and “saint of second chances” (1491-1556) went from self-obsessed sinner to loyal soldier of Christ. (TV-Y -- all children) EWTN (cable)

I Am Legend ( 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm )

(2007) Grim but effective thriller has a brave scientist (Will Smith) as the last surviving person in New York battling ferocious animal and human mutants as he struggles to find a cure for the virus that has eliminated most of the world’s population. Director Francis Lawrence’s remake of Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel has some eerie scenes of a decimated New York, and the computer-generated images of mutants attacking are scary enough when they come, but though Smith is a compelling presence and there are some pointed and admirable spiritual elements, the basic setup ultimately grows tiresome and more depressing than exciting. Intense if isolated violent sequences, including the killing of the creatures, and scantily clad mutants. Might be acceptable for older teens.  (A-III -- adults) (PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned) AMC (cable)

Fighting Father Dunne ( 1:45 pm - 3:30 pm )

(1948) Inspirational tale of a Catholic priest (Patrick O’Brien) in 1905 St. Louis who starts a residence for homeless boys, then struggles to find adequate funding as his efforts expand in rehabilitating a growing number of youths, one of whom (Darryl Hickman) proves incorrigible. Directed by Ted Tetzlaff, the subject is certainly worthy and the treatment sincere, but the result suffers from a bland sentimentality which wears thin today.  (A-I -- general patronage) (Part of a series the same day of films featuring priest characters, including 1939’s Full Confession, 12:30-1:45 p.m.; 1953’s I Confess, 3:30-5:15 p.m.; and 1960’s The Angel Wore Red, 6:15-8 p.m.) TCM (cable)
