Darkest Hour ( 7:00 pm - 9:05 pm )

(2018) The spotlight shines brightly on British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) in this World War II drama about political leadership and backroom intrigue, directed by Joe Wright. Churchill was 65 years old and in the twilight of his political career when he was tapped by King George VI (Ben Mendelsohn) to lead a coalition government in May 1940. The war was going badly for the Allies, and Nazi Germany was marching into Belgium and France, threatening an invasion of Britain. Churchill succeeds the feckless Neville Chamberlain (Ronald Pickup), whose policy of appeasement with Germany has left Britain woefully unprepared for war. But Chamberlain enjoys the king's favor, as does the politically ambitious Viscount Halifax (Stephen Dillane). Together, the trio schemes to disgrace Churchill and put Halifax in power. Encouraged by his faithful wife, Clementine (Kristin Scott Thomas), Churchill convinces his skeptical colleagues to fight and rallies the nation. Although some liberties are taken with the facts, the film offers an important history lesson for young and old about a time when statesmanship mattered most. Brief scenes of wartime violence and some mature themes. (A-II -- adults and adolescents) (PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned) HBO (cable)

St. Rose Of Lima ( 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm )

Profile of Isabel Flores de Oliva, whose love of God and neighbor led to her canonization as St. Rose of Lima, the first saint of the Americas. (TV-Y -- all children) EWTN (cable)

In The Valley Of Elah ( 9:05 pm - 11:10 pm )

(2007) Inspired by true events, this is a powerfully understated drama about a patriotic ex-military man (Tommy Lee Jones) who, leaving his worried wife (Susan Sarandon) at home, searches for their missing son who's just returned from duty in Iraq, and who joins forces with a police detective (Charlize Theron) to break through the military's red tape, as they begin to suspect foul play. Writer-director Paul Haggis' script ultimately delivers a strong anti-war message, and cast members -- who also include Jason Patric, James Franco and Josh Brolin -- give sensitive, nuanced performances. Rough language and profanity, rear shower nudity, upper female nudity, brief gruesome war and morgue imagery and verbal descriptions, suicide, drug references, a violent scuffle. (A-III – adults) (R – restricted) Cinemax (cable)

The Prisoner Of Zenda ( 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm )

(1952) Color remake of the 1937 version has Stewart Granger in the dual role as the Englishman who saves a look-a-like European crown prince from a ruthless usurper (James Mason), then loses his heart to the king’s intended bride (Deborah Kerr). Director Richard Thorpe’s turn-of-the-century costume romance has plenty of regal spectacle. But the bittersweet love story is somewhat stilted, and Mason nearly steals the show as the nasty plotter whose downfall in the big action finish is entirely satisfying. Some stylized violence and romantic complications. (A-I -- general patronage) TCM (cable)

Father Figures ( 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm )

(2017) Threadbare comedy about estranged fraternal twins (Owen Wilson and Ed Helms) who belatedly learn from their mother (Glenn Close) that the man she long ago told them was their deceased father was, in fact, just a friend of hers, and that their real dad may be alive -- through her promiscuous past makes it impossible for her to identify for sure which of many candidates he might be. This discovery launches the siblings on a road trip during which they visit a series of contenders, the first being famed football star Terry Bradshaw, playing himself. Director Lawrence Sher’s formulaic feature debut quickly sinks into a stupor from which only an energetic turn from Katt Williams as a hitchhiker briefly stirs it. And the distasteful premise is matched by a worm’s-eye view of human sexuality throughout, although the resolving plot twist can be seen as vaguely pro-life. Pervasive sexual and some scatological humor, an incest theme, a premarital bedroom scene, about a dozen uses of profanity, a couple of milder oaths, constant rough and crude language. (L -- limited adult audience) (R -- restricted) HBO (cable)

The Shoes Of The Fisherman ( 10:00 am - 12:45 - pm )

(1968) Uneven screen version of the Morris L. West novel about a Russian bishop (Anthony Quinn) who becomes pope and decides the Vatican’s wealth should be given to the world’s poor. Directed by Michael Anderson, the point of the story gets lost in a series of murky subplots involving international intrigue. The religious pageantry is eye-catching but conveyed largely on a superficial level. (A-I -- general patronage) TCM (cable)

A High Wind In Jamaica ( 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm )

(1965) Some children fall into the hands of pirates (Anthony Quinn and James Coburn) who see to it that they are unharmed in the hazardous events that follow. All Quiet On The Western Front ( 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm )

(1930) Excellent adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's novel about the lessons in life and death learned by a patriotic German youth (Lew Ayres) after enlisting in the Kaiser's army and serving at the front during the First World War. In showing the conflict's senseless waste of human life, director Lewis Milestone re-creates with vivid authenticity the horrors of trench warfare while underscoring the humanity of those on both sides of no man's land. Classic anti-war picture especially appropriate for older teenagers, despite some strong battlefield violence and a brief romantic interlude. (A-II -- adults and adolescents) TCM (cable)

Bridge To Terabithia ( 5:25 pm - 6:55 pm )

(2007) Coming-of-age fantasy based on Katherine Paterson's children's novel about a young loner (Josh Hutcherson) who befriends a new girl in school (Anna Sophia Robb) who's also an outcast, and together they create a magical world -- Terabithia -- where they can escape their real-life troubles. The young leads are charming, and the sweet story gently imparts worthy messages about friendship, family, and the power of imagination. But director Gabor Csupo's faithful adaptation is a bit underwhelming, as the anticipated fantastical elements are minimal. Still, despite a plot twist that may upset sensitive young children, the movie is family-friendly. Mature thematic elements, including the death of a child, some minor peril, and mildly crude language. (A-II -- adults and adolescents) (PG -- parental guidance suggested) Showtime (cable)
