U-571 ( 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm )

(2000) Suspenseful World War II action-drama about a young Navy lieutenant (Matthew McConaughey) who leads a daring mission to commandeer a disabled German U-boat and capture a top-secret Nazi encryption device. Writer-director Jonathan Mostow sharply captures the claustrophobia of submarines and the film’s intense visual effects are striking, although bland performances make it difficult to distinguish among the characters. Recurring war violence and fleeting crass language. (A-II — adults and adolescents) (PG-13 — parents strongly cautioned) Showtime (cable)

Madison: The Rail Splitter ( 7:30 pm )

Edgewood College presents The Rail Splitter on February 23, 24, March 2, and 3, at 7:30 p.m. with an additional performance on March 3 at 2 p.m., in the Diane Ballweg Theatre, 1000 Edgewood College Dr. The Rail Splitter, by Rick Cleveland and directed by Audrey Lauren Wax, is a play about Abraham Lincoln -- except, really, it's not. This is not your grandfather's Abe Lincoln play. The story follows a group of college students and a writer as they attempt to write a play about the 16th president of the United States. The students begin with the best intentions but get incredibly -- and hilariously -- off-track. Their efforts go so wrong, so haywire, that the results are basically disastrous. The more they dig up, the more ridiculous their ideas become. Cleveland wrote this to show just how far people can get from a starting point. It's a satire of the docudrama genre. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $8 for students/seniors. To purchase tickets visit http://theatre.edgewood.edu

Alien: Covenant ( 7:00 pm - 9:05 pm )

(2017) Competently shocking addition to the long-standing sci-fi horror franchise that dates back to 1979’s Alien. After a spacecraft on its way to colonize a distant planet is damaged in an incident that also kills several crew members, including the captain (James Franco), the vessel’s new commander (Billy Crudup) decides to divert to a closer world which seems equally suitable for settlement. But the landing party (Katherine Waterston and Carmen Ejogo, among others) soon discovers that welcoming appearances can be deceptive. As director Ridley Scott, who originated the series, unleashes his trademark eat-’em-up-from-the-inside extraterrestrials, the plot eventually turns on a duel between two androids (both played by Michael Fassbender). Grown viewers with a strong tolerance for gore will note an undeveloped theme regarding the religious motivations of Crudup’s character, as well as the virtual disappearance of some gay material tipped in pre-release publicity. Intervals of gruesome bloody violence, brief graphic marital lovemaking, a same-sex kiss, about a half-dozen uses each of profanity and milder swearing, pervasive rough and some crude language. (L — limited adult audience) (R — restricted) HBO (cable)

The Godfather Part 2 ( 4:30 pm - 9:00 pm )

(1974) Lacking the original’s grace, majesty, and energy, the sequel follows the rise to power of a crime boss (Robert De Niro) and the subsequent use of that power by his son (Al Pacino). Produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the unmanageably complex scenario shifts interminably from Lake Tahoe in Nevada to the Kefauver hearings, from New York’s lower East Side to the Florida base of a crime kingpin (Lee Strasberg). The effect is unsettling, and there is much graphic violence. (A-III -- adults) (R -- restricted) AMC (cable)

Quo Vadis ( 6:15 am - 9:15 am )

(1951) After a Roman general (Robert Taylor) falls in love with a Christian maid (Deborah Kerr), the situation is complicated by the loony emperor deciding to burn Rome and blame the Christians. In director Mervyn LeRoy’s version of the Henryk Sienkiewicz novel, the epic production overpowers the pallid love story and is less interested in the conflict between Christianity and paganism than that between the mad Nero (Peter Ustinov) and his rationalist adviser (Leo Genn). A mixed bag of religious fervor and pagan frolics, there’s a lengthy suicide scene, some sexual innuendo, and stylized violence. (A-I — general patronage) TCM (cable)

Patriot's Day ( 7:00 pm - 9:15 pm )

(2017) Effective but unsparing dramatization of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and its violent aftermath. Director and co-writer Peter Berg approaches these events from multiple perspectives, predominantly that of fictional police Sgt. Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg), who is among the first responders to the chaos unleashed by brothers Tamerlan (Themo Melikidze) and Dzhokhar (Alex Wolff) Tsarnaev. Other strands of the story involve lead FBI investigator Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon), his local counterpart, Ed Davis (John Goodman), and Chinese-born app designer Dun Meng (Jimmy O. Yang), whom the murderous siblings carjacked and kidnapped. Berg ratchets up the suspense as authorities scramble to identify and capture the fugitives before they can carry out further attacks. And his script, penned with Matt Cook and Joshua Zetumer, is clear about the need to oppose evil with love and decency. But the bloody carnage caused by the assault is not kept off-screen, nor are viewers shielded from a torrent of tension-induced swearing. Disturbing and sometimes gruesome images of terrorist mayhem, considerable gore, drug use, a marital bedroom scene, several uses of profanity, pervasive rough and crude language.
