The Tall Target ( 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm )

(1951) Engrossing thriller set in 1861 aboard a Washington-bound train as New York City detective John Kennedy (Dick Powell) tries to thwart an assassination plot to kill President-elect Abraham Lincoln. Director Anthony Mann keeps the suspense tight and the period details add interest, but the ending is a bit of a letdown. Stylized violence. (A-I -- general patronage). TCM (cable)

Free State Of Jones ( 9:15 pm - 11:35 pm )

(2016) Ambitious, earnest and frequently riveting historical drama about the real-life Mississippi farmer (a charismatic Matthew McConaughey) who led a group of fellow deserters and runaway slaves in an armed campaign against the Confederacy during the Civil War. Writer-director Gary Ross spent a decade researching the project in collaboration with various scholars and painstakingly provides historical context using screen titles and other slightly less obvious guideposts, which can give the film a lumbering feel. The sense that every emotional reaction and cognitive response has been calculated in an attempt to craft a rousing, informative picture means the story doesn't unfold as organically or artfully as it might. Yet with the help of first-rate cinematography and design work, it stands as a powerful, thought-provoking piece of popular entertainment suitable for mature adolescents despite the complex and often harsh subject matter. Frequent graphic war violence including some grisly images, several hangings, the brutal execution of a wounded soldier, off-camera sexual exploitation of a woman, many racial epithets, one use each of crude and crass language. (A-III – adults). (R -- restricted. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). Showtime (cable)

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children ( 7:00 pm - 9:10 pm )

(2016) Following the mysterious death of his beloved grandfather (Terence Stamp), a Florida teen (Asa Butterfield) convinces his dad (Chris O'Dowd) to take him to the remote island off the coast of Wales where the old man had been sent during World War II to see if the otherworldly tales Grandpa used to tell him about the institution of the title (run by Eva Green) could possibly be true. A complicated premise and the head-scratching implications of time travel hobble director Tim Burton's otherwise mildly entertaining gothic fantasy, populated by kids endowed with paranormal gifts and adapted from Ransom Riggs' 2011 novel. As the lad falls for a girl (Ella Purnell) who can float in the air and battles an eyeless villain (Samuel L. Jackson), familiar Hollywood tropes about the value of being different from everyone else and substituting a self-selected family for an inadequate biological one are trotted out yet again. While too scary for tots, the film is generally well suited for their older siblings, the occasional touch of slightly vulgar language aside. Much stylized violence with minimal gore, some disturbing images, at least one use of profanity, a milder oath, a few crass terms. (A-II -- adults and adolescents). (PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13). HBO (cable)

Live from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. EWTN (cable)

A Tree Grows In Brooklyn ( 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm )

(1945) Solid adaptation of Betty Smith's novel about a young girl (Peggy Ann Garner) growing up in a working-class Brooklyn neighborhood around 1900. Under Elia Kazan's sensitive direction, the movie chronicles her troubled family's hand-to-mouth existence, with father (James Dunn) mostly unemployed and often inebriated, mother (Dorothy McGuire) holding the household together, and the kids experiencing the various pains and joys of being young during hard times. Warmly evocative picture of family life, though a bit heavy for youngsters. (A-II -- adults and adolescents). TCM (cable)
