Pride & Prejudice ( 7:15 pm - 9:30 pm )

(2005) Fine version of Jane Austen's evergreen classic concerning the five unmarried Bennet girls whose mother (Brenda Blethyn) is strenuously determined to marry them off in 18th-century England, and the crossed-signals romance between Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) and the wealthy Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) whose apparent dislike for each other -- because of his arrogance and her judgmental attitude -- masks a profound attraction. Director Joe Wright makes the settings more realistically rough-hewn than usual; even so the film is visually stunning and its top-flight supporting players -- Donald Sutherland, Judi Dench, Penelope Wilton, and Tom Hollander among them -- make this highly recommendable for all ages. (A-I -- general patronage) (PG -- parental guidance suggested) Showtime (cable)

Going In Style ( 7:00 pm - 8:40 pm )

(2017) Leaden comedy about a trio of retirees (Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin) driven to desperation by financial woes who cook up an unlikely scheme to rob a branch of the bank they blame for the cancellation of their pensions. As they get tips for a successful caper from an experienced criminal (John Ortiz), Arkin's grouchy character finds romance with a grocery store checkout lady (Ann-Margret). Director Zach Braff's remake of Martin Brest's 1979 film -- which also features Matt Dillon as an FBI agent -- amounts to a complete waste of its cast's considerable gifts. While not a movie from which viewers are likely to draw any real-life moral conclusions, it does present the oldsters' actions as justified and ultimately harmless. A frivolous treatment of crime, including drug use, a couple of brief premarital bedroom scenes, a scatological sight gag, about a half-dozen uses of profanity, some vulgar sexual references, a single instance of rough language, considerable crude and crass talk. (A-III – adults) (PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned) HBO (cable)

Jerzy Popieluszko: Messenger Of The Truth ( 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm )

The true story of Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko, a priest who spoke out against communism in Poland. EWTN (cable)

S.W.A.T. ( 9:10 pm - 11:10 pm )

(2003) Loud and lackluster police actioner about an elite Los Angeles anti-crime unit (including Colin Farrell and Samuel L. Jackson) assigned to guard an international drug kingpin en route to a federal penitentiary. Based on the popular 1970s TV series, the film, directed by Clark Johnson, is an adolescent boys' playground, which, while drawing a distinction between "good" and "bad" guys, treats violence as entertainment, eliciting its thrills through tedious shoot-'em -ups and mind-numbing crash-and-smash sequences. Much violence, some profanity, and crude sexual language. (L -- limited adult audience) (PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned) Cinemax (cable)

Sunday, December 17, 2017
Mass ( 6:00 am - 6:30 am )

Apostolate to the Handicapped WISC (CBS) 7 a.m. on TVW and Direct TV 14.

The Nativity Story ( 7:30 am - 9:30 am )

(2006) Dramatization of the New Testament birth narratives from the Annunciation to the birth of Jesus, focusing on the relationship between Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes) and Joseph (Oscar Isaac) and their arduous trek from Nazareth to Bethlehem, with subplots tracking the journey of the three Magi, and the efforts of King Herod (Ciaran Hinds) to prevent the prophecy of a messiah from coming to pass. A composite of the Gospel of Matthew and Gospel of Luke, embroidered with apocryphal traditions and the imagination of the filmmaker, the Bible story gets the prestige treatment in director Catherine Hardwicke's artful, reverent, and affecting retelling, with soulful performances from an excellent international cast -- including Shohreh Aghdashloo as Elizabeth -- and impressive production design. Mike Rich's screenplay manages to flesh out Mary and Joseph while remaining faithful to Scripture, poignantly suggesting the humanity beneath the halos. Some violent images. (A-I -- general patronage) (PG -- parental guidance suggested) AMC (cable)

Miracle On 34th Street ( 12:15 - pm - 2:30 pm )

(1947) Familiar seasonal favorite follows a department store Santa (Edmund Gwenn) as he strives to convince a lonely little girl (Natalie Wood) that he's the genuine article, despite the objections of her rigidly pragmatic mother (Maureen O'Hara) and a court trial that hinges on the U.S. Post Office. Director George Seaton's amusing romantic fantasy has its sentimental moments while spreading a reasonable amount of holiday cheer, largely due to Gwenn's charming performance as Kris Kringle. (A-II -- adults and adolescents) (Not rated) AMC (cable)

Christmas With Collin Raye Featuring Andrea Thomas ( 12:30 - pm - 1:30 pm )

Country music star Collin Raye and vocalist Andrea Thomas present cherished songs of the Christmas season. (TV-G -- general audience) EWTN (cable)

The Sound Of Music ( 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm )

(1965) Particularly fine screen version of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical about the formative years of the Trapp Family Singers in Austria between the two world wars. Its interesting story, solid cast (headed by Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer), lovely music and intelligent lyrics, colorful scenery, and pleasant fantasy will entertain the mind and enliven the spirit. Directed by Robert Wise, the movie has held up over the years as thoroughly refreshing family entertainment. (A-I -- general patronage) (G -- general audiences) WKOW (ABC)

We Were Soldiers ( 4:25 pm - 6:45 pm )

(2002) Powerful Vietnam War drama about the first battle between American troops, led by fatherly Lt. Col. Harold G. Moore (Mel Gibson), and the Viet Cong enemy. Despite slim characterizations and a few clichés, writer-director Randall Wallace's harrowing true story depicts war with raw, graphic imagery that underscores the wrenching loss of human life as it touches briefly upon the formidable struggle to reconcile Christianity and warfare. Constant war violence with many bloody, chilling images and some rough language with profanity. (L -- limited adult audience)(R – restricted) Showtime (cable)

Christmas In Connecticut ( 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm )

(1945) Breezy, romantic comedy in which the unmarried writer (Barbara Stanwyck) of a popular homemaker column has to invent a husband, baby, and country home after her unsuspecting publisher (Sydney Greenstreet) invites a war hero (Dennis Morgan) to celebrate Christmas with her "family." Directed by Peter Godfrey, the slickly contrived proceedings benefit from a capable cast, but the slapdash humor is uneven and the romance less than convincing. Romantic situations, sexual innuendo, and much comic duplicity. (A-III – adults) (Not rated) TCM (cable)

The Song Of Bernadette ( 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm )

(1943) Durable adaptation of the Franz Werfel novel about Bernadette Soubirous (Jennifer Jones), the French schoolgirl who in 1858 saw apparitions of Mary at a grotto near Lourdes. But news of this is initially discredited by her stern pastor (Charles Bickford), the town prosecutor (Vincent Price), and an envious teacher (Gladys Cooper). Directed by Henry King, the story of a young girl's faith withstanding the disbelief of her elders is made dramatically convincing by a fine cast, evocative photography, and largely unsentimental treatment. (A-I -- general patronage) (Not rated) TCM (cable)

CMA Country Christmas ( 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm )

Luke Bryan, Alan Jackson, Lady Antebellum, and Little Big Town are among the performers featured in this holiday special filmed at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tenn. Reba McEntire hosts. (TV-PG -- parental guidance suggested) WKOW (ABC)

The Zookeeper's Wife ( 7:00 pm - 9:10 pm )

(2017) Inspiring, but dramatically thin historical drama in which the couple (Jessica Chastain and Johan Heldenbergh) who run the Warsaw Zoo defy the Nazis occupying Poland -- including the head (Daniel Bruhl) of their facility's counterpart in Berlin who has been made their supervisor -- by smuggling Jews out of the ghetto and hiding them until the resistance can arrange their escape from the country. Chastain forcefully conveys her character's appealing personality. But, in adapting Diane Ackerman's 2007 nonfiction best-seller, director Niki Caro and screenwriter Angela Workman, fall short of a compelling narrative. Parents will have to weigh the uplifting nature of the film -- having helped more than 300 potential victims of the Holocaust, the central pair was eventually declared "righteous among the nations" -- against some of the grim incidents it depicts in deciding whether this makes suitable fare for older teens. Considerable combat and other violence, a couple of marital bedroom scenes, a glimpse of upper female nudity, mature themes, including gang rape and adultery. (A-III – adults) (PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned) HBO (cable)

(1988) A Florida cabby (rubber-mouthed comic Jim Varney) picks up Santa (Douglas Seale) at the Orlando airport and takes him into town in quest of a younger man to replace him at the North Pole but they meet up with some disbelief. Directed by John Cherry, it's a holiday hoot with some good virtues for the youngsters. Some hectic traffic pile-ups and tense aerial moments. (A-II -- adults and adolescents) (PG -- parental guidance suggested) AMC (cable)

Beauty And The Beast ( 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm )

(1991)Enchanting animated fairy tale of a young maiden who rescues her father from a ferocious beast only to fall in love with the creature's gentler qualities. Computer graphics enhance classic Disney animation for eye-pleasing visuals enlivened by rousing musical numbers and delightful characterizations from directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale. Brief scary scenes. (A-I -- general patronage) (G -- general audiences) WKOW (ABC)

The Bells Of St. Mary's ( 9:00 pm - 11:15 pm )

(1945) Director Leo McCarey's sequel to Going My Way (1944) pulls out all the emotional stops in a sugary confection that takes happy-go-lucky Father O'Malley (Bing Crosby) to a poor parish with a crumbling school run by overworked Sister Benedict (Ingrid Bergman). Though their conflicting views on education have less to do with the plot than the chasm between their personalities, Bergman's shining performance as the idealistic nun is still worth watching. Sentimental, yet warm picture of Catholic life in an age of innocence. (A-I -- general patronage) (Not rated) TCM (cable)

Happy New Year, Charlie Brown ( 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm )

In this classic Peanuts special, the gang is preparing to ring in 1986, and Marcie and Peppermint Patty are throwing a big New Year's Eve bash. But Charlie Brown plans to celebrate the holiday by curling up with a big book that weighs nearly as much as he does: Tolstoy's War and Peace. Another Peanuts cartoon, She's a Good Skate, Charlie Brown, follows 8:30-9 p.m. (TV-G -- general audience) KNOW (ABC)

Annie Get Your Gun ( 9:15 pm - 11:15 pm )

(1950) Big and brassy version of the Irving Berlin musical in which rustic Annie Oakley (Betty Hutton) gets some polish working with Frank Butler (Howard Keel) in a sharpshooting act, then finds fame and finally gets her man Butler after Buffalo Bill (Louis Calhoun) makes her a star in his Wild West Show. Directed by George Sidney, this show has lots of stunt riding, staged Indian attacks and shootouts which make a suitable backdrop for Hutton's overcharged performance, with the result memorable chiefly for its songs ranging from the romantic "The Girl That I Marry" to the comedic "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly" and "Anything You Can Do" and the signature tune, "There's No Business Like Show Business." Romantic complications. (A-II -- adults and adolescents) (Not rated) TCM (cable)

King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword ( 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm )

2017) Ponderous action fantasy in which, once grown, the monarch of the title (Charlie Hunnam) who was dispossessed of his rights as a child and raised as a brawling street urchin by the inhabitants of a London brothel, uses Excalibur to battle the evil uncle (Jude Law) who long ago usurped his throne. Together with his script collaborators, Joby Harold and Lionel Wigram, director and co-writer Guy Ritchie works the occasional witty exchange into the dialogue. But otherwise his film is a grueling ordeal of nonstop noisy fighting. Possibly acceptable for mature teens. Pervasive combat and other violence with little blood, a prostitution theme, brief partial nudity, fleeting sexual humor, at least one rough term, occasional crass language. (A-III – adults) (PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned) HBO (cable)
