Director King Vidor’s silent masterpiece achieves its impact not through plot or story devices but by capturing the human details of everyday life from its simple joys to it humdrum routines which viewers recognize as not far different from their own. John Wick: Chapter 2 ( 7:00 pm - 9:05 pm )

(2017) Stylized, nearly cartoonish nihilism and the high body count that results from it create most of the apparent appeal of this second drama about the professional assassin of the title, played by Keanu Reeves. The rest, as directed by Chad Stahelski from Derek Kolstad's script, consists of small moments -- quite small, since there's nearly no dialogue -- of mordant and questionable humor. The core story has Wick violently pulled out of retirement and unwillingly drawn into a plot to seize a seat at the High Table, a criminal enterprise. An Italian playboy (Riccardo Scamarcio) wants the seat held by his fur-adorned sister (Claudia Gerini). To get it, he orders Wick to treat Sis with extreme prejudice. Pervasive action violence with little blood, a suicide, brief full female nudity. (L -- limited adult audience) (R -- restricted) (HBO) (cable)

The Beguiled ( 9:15 pm - 11:00 pm )

(1971) Civil War story in which a wounded Union soldier (Clint Eastwood) takes refuge in a Southern school for ladies whom he must keep beguiled or risk being turned over to the Confederates. Directed by Don Siegel, this murky gothic horror story ends with the captive paying dearly for his ingratitude towards his captors' sick brand of Southern hospitality. In addition to the implied sexual situation, there is an explicit seduction followed by a gruesome amputation scene. (L -- limited adult audience) (R -- restricted) Cinemax (cable)

Wuthering Heights ( 11:15 am - 1:15 pm )

(1939) Classic romantic melodrama from the Emily Bronte novel about the doomed love between Cathy (Merle Oberon), a Yorkshire doctor's daughter, and Heathcliff (Laurence Olivier), the downtrodden orphan who grows up with her, then runs away to make his fortune only to return to find Cathy wed to another (David Niven) and his riches meaningless without her. Directed by William Wyler, the well-crafted melodrama succeeds in evoking the fierce passion of Heathcliff's tormented yearnings for his lost love which allow him no peace until their spirits are united after death. Physical and mental cruelties, romantic obsessions and a spite marriage. The Catholic News Service classification of the theatrical version was A-III -- adults. Not rated by the Motion Picture Association of America. TCM (cable)

Young Guns II ( 4:30 pm - 6:15 pm )

(1990) Claiming to be Billy the Kid, a grizzled old cowboy (Emilio Estevez) recounts in flashback what really happened after his one-time friend, Pat Garrett (William Petersen), put on a sheriff's badge and set out to kill the Kid and his gang. Director Geoff Murphy's spirited sequel has some good performances and eye-catching scenery but tends to idealize the outlaws as hip and funny true-blue buddies -- especially troubling as they introduce a young teen to their lusty, lawless way of life. Some gory violence, implied sexual liaisons, several shots of rear nudity and occasional profanity.  (A-III -- adults) (PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned) Showtime (cable)

Annabelle ( 7:00 pm - 9:15 pm )

(2014) This demon-possessed doll tale, a sort-of prequel to 2013's The Conjuring, delivers a reliable series of horror-genre jolts under the direction of John R. Leonetti from Gary Dauberman's script. A mother (Annabelle Wallis) in 1970 Southern California tries to protect her baby daughter from satanic forces who want the infant's soul. Their principal tool is the devil-driven figurine of the title. Though Mom and Dad (Ward Horton) get helpful aphorisms from a kindly Catholic priest (Tony Amendola), it's the owner (Alfre Woodard) of a bookstore specializing in the paranormal who proves more vital to the machinations. Occult themes, two scenes of bloody knife violence and intense action sequences. (A-III -- adults) (R -- restricted) AMC (cable)

Psycho ( 7:00 pm - 9:15 pm )

(1960) Classic thriller from the Robert Bloch story in which a private detective (Martin Balsam) tracks a missing person (Janet Leigh) to a lonely, back-roads motel whose affable but high-strung manager (Anthony Perkins) seems strangely preoccupied with the demands of his invalid mother in the eerie Victorian house atop a nearby hill. Director Alfred Hitchcock starts the proceedings with an impulsive theft, and then smoothly switching gears, turns the ordinary into a scary, sinister nightmare with a compulsive murderer on the loose at the motel. Strong adult fare with much suspense, brief but shocking violence, most notably in the motel shower scene, and some sexual references. (A-III – adults) (Not rated) TCM (cable)

The Mystery Of John Paul II ( 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm )

Split ( 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm )

(2017) Psychological thriller from writer-director M. Night Shyamalan posits that victims of childhood abuse are not only prone to dissociative identity disorder -- split personalities -- but also that each persona can have unique physical characteristics. Shyamalan’s not out to make anyone think too deeply about this prognosis. He prefers to couch the story in the efficient tropes of a cheese-ball teen-abduction drama, using reliable scream queen Anya Taylor-Joy as a lure. Together with Haley Lu Richardson and Jessica Sula, Taylor-Joy plays one of a trio of abductees kidnapped and threatened by schizophrenic molestation survivor James McAvoy. From early on, the film follows the familiar pattern of teen girls in peril, with a general amoral” about what doesn’t kill you making you stronger -- in this case, amazingly stronger. Possibly suitable for older adolescents. Gun and physical violence with some gore, mature themes, including sexual abuse, fleeting rough language. ( A-III -- adults) (PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned) HBO (cable)

Basic ( 9:15 pm - 10:55 pm )

(2003) Unsatisfying military thriller in which an ex-Army Ranger (John Travolta) and a prickly Army captain (Connie Nielsen) must try to unravel the truth behind the Panama jungle deaths of a hated Special Forces sergeant (Samuel L. Jackson) and four trainees under him, while two survivors spin an elaborate series of stories about what happened. Director John McTiernan’s macho action flick takes a Rashomon-like approach to the narrative, but the dozen characters, murky visuals and constant plot twists eventually become tedious. Recurring violence, much rough language and intermittent profanity. (L -- limited adult audience) (R – restricted) Cinemax (cable)

We Are Marshall ( 12:00 - noon - 3:00 pm )

(2006) Moving true-life story about the aftermath of a 1970 plane crash in West Virginia that killed 70 players, coaches and fans of a college football team, and how the grieving university town came to recover its spirit by the formation of a largely new team galvanized by the leadership of a new coach (a dynamic Matthew McConaughey), working in tandem with the Marshall University president (David Strathairn) and the assistant coach of the former team (Matthew Fox). Director McG’s (actually Joseph McGinty Nichol) film, though to some extent formulaic and predictable, is several notches above average, bolstered by solid performances including that of Ian McShane, and a script that mostly avoids cliche, with good messages about winning not being everything, accepting loss, and healing from it, with a good sense of this being a faith-based community. Several uses of the S-word as favored by the coach, a few other crass expressions, and discreetly handled plane crash. (A-II -- adults and adolescents) (PG -- parental guidance suggested) Lifetime (cable)

The Old Dark House ( 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm )

(1932) Creaky chills from J.B. Priestley’s novel set on a stormy night in Wales where five travelers (notably Raymond Massey, Melvyn Douglas, and Charles Laughton) seek shelter in a crumbling, candlelit manor whose strange owners (Ernest Thesiger and Eva Moore) and deaf-mute butler (Boris Karloff) guard a dark family secret. Director James Whale lightens the ominous atmosphere with a romantic subplot (Douglas and Lillian Bond), but the real fun lies in the scary setting with its eerie shadows, macabre characters, and fears of what’s hidden in the dark. Playful exercise in menace with some stylized violence and sexual situations. (A-III – adults) (Not rated) TCM (cable)
