St. Bernard Players to hold auditions

MADISON -- St. Bernard Players will hold auditions for Meredith Willson's The Music Man on Monday, May 16, at 6 p.m. at the Parish Center and Theatre of St. Bernard Church, 2438 Atwood Ave. in Madison.

Anyone wishing to audition must bring 16 bars of a song of their choice and be prepared to read from the script and learn a short dance combination.

If necessary, callbacks will be held on Tuesday, May 17.

Performance dates are July 15, 16, 17, 21, 22, and 23. For more information, call 608-249-9256, ext. 228.

Handbell concert

MADISON -- The Madison Area Concert Handbells will present their spring concert, "For Whom the Bells Toll."

The concert bells will toll memorable and exciting melodies that live on known by their characters' names or the names of their composers.

They will be joined by guests such as vocalists; instrumentalists on trumpet, flute, piccolo, and timpani; a tap dancer; and clowns.

Concerts will be presented Friday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Dennis Church, 413 Dempsey Rd., Madison, and Saturday, May 14, at 7:30 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 6101 University Ave.

Tickets are available at Borders Book Shops, Orange Tree Imports, or at the door. Advance tickets are: adults, $12; seniors (60+) and youth (16 and under), $9; at the door they are adults: $15; seniors and youth, $10.

Milwaukee cathedral brass/organ concert

MILWAUKEE -- The Fine Arts Commission of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 812 N. Jackson St., announces the Millennia Consort will present a Brass and Organ Spectacular on Thursday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is $15 for adults or $10 for students and seniors. Preferred seating may be reserved online by visiting www.stjohncathedral.org

The repertoire for this concert will include Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, Kuzma's setting of Amazing Grace, Hirten's Ceathair, and more.

Celebrate Madison!

MADISON -- Celebrate Madison! announces its sixth annual festival, set for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, at the Monona Terrace Convention Center's Exhibit Hall.

Live entertainment, arts and crafts, and informative community agency booths are among the many activities planned. The festival is free and is designed to include the whole family.

A wide variety of local and regional live entertainment will perform and children will have opportunities for hands-on activities.

Celebrate Madison! was created in 1999 in an effort to bring local ethnic communities together.

Kanopy spring program

MADISON -- "Kanopy Dance Company in Concert" will show off the best and brightest among Kanopy Dance Company's own performers presenting their original works.

Performances will be held Thursday through Saturday, May 19, 20, and 21, at 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, at 3 p.m. in the Wisconsin Studio of the Overture Center for the Arts. Tickets are $20. Call the Overture Center box office at 608-258-4141.

Five new dances with choreography by local artists Anca Cristina Botez, Erica Akiko Howard, Brianne Schenkel, Jessica Vokoun, and regional guest artist Emily Serafy Cox will be premiered.

Monday, May 9, 1 p.m., WYOU (cable) -- Christopher Close-Up: "A Path Into Prayer." Writer Liz Kelly discusses her struggles with her religious faith, the emotional aftermath of being raped, and the spiritual renewal she felt after praying the rosary.

Monday, May 9, 8:30 p.m., WHA (PBS) -- The Carter Family: Will the Circle Be Unbroken. This American Experience presentation profiles the lives of A.P., Sara, and Maybelle Carter, the "first family of country music," beginning with their childhood and following their story through 1943, when they stopped playing and recording together after bringing solace to the nation during the darkest days of the Depression.

Thursday, May 12, 7 p.m., WKOW (ABC) -- Pearl Harbor (2001). Hollow drama set against the 1941 Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in which two pilots (Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett) fall in love with the same woman (Kate Beckinsale). The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification of the theatrical version was A-III - adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was PG-13.

Friday, May 13, 7 p.m., WMSN (Fox) -- X-Men (2000). Entertaining sci-fi thriller that pits outcast humans whose genetic mutations give them superpowers against evil mutants intent on ruling over humanity. The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification of the theatrical version was A-II - adults and adolescents. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was PG-13.


Radio Programs of Note

Friday, May 6, 9 a.m., Relevant Radio (1240 AM) -- Relevant 2 U. This locally produced magazine-style program features people, events, and Catholic issues in the Diocese of Madison. This program includes Bishop Robert C. Morlino's homily on Pope Benedict XVI at St. James Parish centennial Mass in Madison; Fr. Felix Oehrlein, pastor of St. Cecilia Parish, Wisconsin Dells, in a vocational address to Serrans; Joe Mauer, Knights of Columbus, on the Portage council history; and Bishop Morlino's faith-based panel discussion at the International Conference on BioEthics. Repeats 12 noon May 7 and 9 a.m. May 8.

Sundays, 1 p.m., Relevant Radio (1240 AM) -- Life Worth Living. With Archbishop Fulton Sheen.

Monday-Friday, 6 a.m., Relevant Radio (1240 AM) -- Morning Air. This morning show has listeners tuning in for a blend of entertainment, information, and interviews. Morning AirTM talks about life in terms of faith in the workplace; time management; current affairs; movie reviews; realistic looks at media and entertainment with updates of local and national news, sports highlights, stock reports, and more.

Monday-Friday, 3 p.m., Relevant Radio (1240 AM) -- The Drew Mariani Show. This program aims at opening a daily dialogue with Catholics across America.
