Vatican exhibition:
Tickets available

MILWAUKEE -- Tickets for "Saint Peter and the Vatican: The Legacy of the Popes" presented by The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation at the Milwaukee Public Museum Feb. 4 through May 7, 2006 are now on sale.

The exhibit features a collection of Vatican art and historic objects tracing 2,000 years of church leadership.

Chronicle of papacy

Chronicling the papacy from St. Peter to Pope John Paul II, "Saint Peter and the Vatican" brings together more than 300 works of art and draws on never-before-seen historic objects from the permanent collections of the Vatican museums.

The historical sculptures, paintings, and other objects tell the story of the 264 popes who have headed the Roman Catholic Church, impacted world history, and influenced Western civilizations. Exhibition highlights include a bronze cast of the hand of John Paul II, his pastoral staff, and other personal objects.

"It was the pope's wish that a personal blessing, as well as a cast of his hand welcome those visiting the exhibition. This gesture from the pope takes on even greater significance to visitors who will see the exhibition in Milwaukee," Museum President Michael D. Stafford said.

The exhibition will be presented in collaboration with the Milwaukee Archdiocese. The museum is the only Midwest venue and the last U.S. stop on the exhibition's three-city North American tour.

Tickets are adults (16 to 61) $18.50, seniors (62 plus) $17.50, and children (3 to 5) $11.50. Reservations are recommended - call 414-278-2728 or 888-700-9069. For more information visit www.mpm.edu

Display of works

Masterworks of gold and silver, marble sculptures, intricately embroidered silk vestments, papal rings, and jewels are among the items to be displayed.

Other highlights include a reproduction of the Tomb of St. Peter and the Mandylion of Edessa, a third- to fifth-century image on linen considered the oldest known representation of Jesus.

Historic objects include the Papa Tiara of Pope Pius IX, the symbol of the papacy, made of silver, gold, pearls and diamonds, emeralds, and other precious stones; a 16th-century chalice encrusted with pearls, rock crystal, silver gilt, and enamel; the first known map of Australia; a Buddhist Thanka of embroidered cloth and pearls, presented by the Dalai Lama as a gift to John Paul II.

"The Milwaukee Public Museum provides the ideal venue for this extraordinary exhibition on the role of the papacy," said Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan of the Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee. "The exhibition is sure to inspire and educate Catholics and non-Catholics alike on the successor of Saint Peter, his role in promoting international peace and justice, and his historical commitment to increasing dialogue with other world religions."

Exhibition objects are on loan from many Vatican City State institutions.
