Marian College concerts

FOND DU LAC -- Marian College's music department will have two concerts in Fond du Lac.

The Collegiate Wind Ensemble and Instrumental Ensemble will perform at the UW-Fond du Lac Prairie Theater on Sunday, April 17, at 3:30 p.m.

The annual Marian College Music Department Students' Recital in the Hornung Student Center will be held Monday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m. A reception will follow.

The public is invited to all the free performances.

Make-A-Wish benefit

MADISON -- A raffle is currently underway to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Wisconsin.

The raffle is part of the second annual Kim & Jason Benefit for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which will take place on Thursday, April 21, at the Marriott Madison West from 5 to 8 p.m.

"We were able to raise over $6,000 last year, and wanted to build on that success this year," said Jason Kotecki, event organizer, Madison area wish granter, and creator of the comic strip Kim & Jason. "Area businesses have been very generous in providing prizes for the raffle and silent auction. Veridian Homes donated $2,000, which allowed us to offer the cruise package."

Milwaukee St. John Cathedral concert

MILWAUKEE -- The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 812 N. Jackson St., will present "Grand Music for a Grand Space" on Friday, April 15, at 7:30 p.m.

This concert will celebrate music written for and performed in cathedrals around the world. It will feature the choirs and soloists of the cathedral accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Works presented will include William Mathias' Let the People Praise Thee, O God, which was composed for the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer; William Byrd's Mass for Four Voices; and Hildegard von Bingen's O Frondens Virga.

Admission is $20 or $15 for students and seniors. Preferred seating may be reserved by visiting www.stjohncathedral.org

Sunday Afternoon Live

MADISON -- Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem welcomes the Wisconsin Brass Quintet, Sunday, April 17, at 12:30 p.m. in Brittingham Gallery III at the Elvehjem Museum of Art.

The UW-Madison ensemble-in-residence will perform a colorful program, including music from Bela Bartok to Paquito D'Rivera.

There will be a cookie and tea reception after the performance. A free docent-led tour of the Elvehjem Museum begins at 2 p.m.

Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem is a free weekly chamber music series presented by the Elvehjem Museum of Art and Wisconsin Public Radio, with the cooperation of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music.

The series, hosted by music commentator Lori Skelton, is broadcast live on Wisconsin Public Radio stations, including WERN, 88.7, Madison.

Sinsinawa Mound Civic Chorus concert

SINSINAWA -- The Sinsinawa Mound Civic Chorus will present their spring concert in Queen of the Rosary Chapel, Sinsinawa Mound, at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 24.

Music will include hymns of adoration, praise, and glorification and Buxtehude's Lord, Keep us Steadfast in Thy Word.

Two of the musical selections will be accompanied by two violins and a cello. The Civic Chorus has 16 members from communities around the tri-state area. Tickets are $10 and $6 for senior citizens.

Monday, April 18, 1 p.m., WYOU (cable) -- Christopher Close-Up: "American Original." Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns shares his enthusiasm for history and storytelling, and reveals how his mother's death from cancer shaped his life and career.

Tuesday, April 19, 9 p.m., WHA (PBS) -- Gaylord Nelson: A Profile. The founder of Earth Day offers extensive comments on his love of the land, particularly the stunning vistas throughout Wisconsin. Nelson was the governor of Wisconsin from 1959 to 1963 and served as a United States senator.

Wednesday, April 20, 8 p.m., USA (cable) -- Ring of Fire: The Emile Griffith Story. Acclaimed Sundance Film Festival documentary about the life of six-time world boxing champion Emile Griffith who, in 1962, killed then-champion Benny "Kid" Paret in the ring, a bout that had a lasting impact on the sport, and also on the media and politics of the time.

Wednesday, April 20, 8 p.m., WHA (PBS) -- Invaders/The One Degree Factor. The first of a three-part National Geographic's Strange Days on Planet Earth series, hosted by actor Edward Norton, looks at the cause-and-effect relationship between what humans do to the Earth and how that affects our environment and ecosystems. It's part of PBS' salute to Earth Day 2005.

Saturday, April 23, 7 p.m., Bravo (cable) -- Cirque du Soleil: La Nouba. The troupe's spectacular show features 10 acts, including the aerial cradle, flying trapeze, high wire, German wheel, and the power track/trampoline, as presented at Orlando's Walt Disney World.


Radio Programs of Note

Friday, April 15, 9 a.m., Relevant Radio (1240 AM) -- Relevant 2 U. This locally produced magazine-style program features people, events, and Catholic issues in the Diocese of Madison. Repeats 12 noon April 16 and 9 a.m. April 17.
