Cathedral concerts

MILWAUKEE -- The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 812 N. Jackson St., continues its Wednesday concert series.

Concerts take place every Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. and run for approximately 30 minutes. They are free and open to the public.

The following is a schedule of remaining concerts for August: Aug. 4 - John Clodig, organ; Aug. 11 - Beth Delorit, flute; Aug. 18 - Milwaukee Public Schools Senior Harp Ensemble, Jeanne Kahn, director; Aug. 25 - Ingrid Pierson, piano and Deborah Hanks, clarinet.

Ice cream social

MADISON -- Independent Living, Inc. is hosting its annual ice cream social on Sunday, Aug. 1, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Independent Living Retirement Community at 602 N. Segoe Rd.

The Capitol City Band, led by Jim Latimer will perform.

Admission to the event is free and open to the public. Bring a lawn chair and $2 for an ice cream sundae.

Mansion Hill tour

MADISON -- Madison's Mansion Hill will be the focus of a special, one-night-only walking tour presented by Capitol Neighborhoods Inc. and the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation.

Tours will begin at 5:30 p.m., rain or shine, on Thursday, July 29.

Tickets for the tour are $10 per person and free to members of Capitol Neighborhoods and the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation. Reservations are not required.

Tours will depart every 10 to 20 minutes between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Those taking the tour should meet in front of 315 Wisconsin Ave., The Hiebing Group advertising agency.

Stoneware exhibit

SINSINAWA -- Sinsinawa Mound Art Gallery will feature the stoneware of artist John Thomas from Aug. 1 through Sept. 30. Thomas is preparing new pieces for the show entitled "Pantry, Kitchen, and Table: Stoneware for Daily Use." The opening reception is Sunday, Aug. 1, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Thomas creates pottery to be useful in daily life. He believes the stoneware must have a purpose, not just an artistic function. Thomas fashions well-balanced pieces that are pleasant to look at and hold in your hands. He wants them to be a joy to use in daily life.

Visitors may view the show in the Mound Gallery from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. More art can be found in the bookshop, open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Sunday.

Following are some theatrical movies and television programs of note. This information is being provided to assist people in making viewing choices.

Monday-Friday, 2:30 p.m., Inspiration Channel (cable) -- Catholic Mass.

Monday-Sunday, 7 a.m., 11 a.m., 6 p.m., 11 p.m., EWTN (cable) -- Daily Mass. No 6 p.m. showing on Sunday.

Sunday, Aug. 1, 7 a.m., WISC (CBS) -- Mass. Celebrated by Msgr. Thomas Campion, sponsored by Apostolate to the Handicapped.

Sunday, Aug. 1, 6 p.m., WHA (PBS) -- In Wisconsin. Rick Bott of Baraboo transforms 150-year-old barn timbers and weathered siding into beautiful post-and-beam homes, furniture, flooring, and trim. Mike Dombeck, chief of the U.S. Forest Service from 1997 through 2001, has returned to his native state to teach at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and shares his views on forestry issues.

Sunday, Aug. 1, 8 p.m., Discovery (cable) -- Columbus: Secrets From the Grave. New scientific evidence would seem to suggest that the traditional facts of the explorer's life may have been intentionally obscured, leading historians to theorize that he may have had something to hide.

Sunday, Aug. 8, 3:30 a.m., EWTN (cable) -- EWTN New Season Preview. Host Doug Keck gives viewers a glimpse of the new series debuting on EWTN this fall. The half-hour special will include interviews with special guests and live show hosts. Repeats 10 p.m. Aug. 10; 1 p.m. Aug. 11; 10 p.m. Aug. 13; and 5:30 p.m. Aug. 16.
