Gubernatorial forum on public TV

MADISON -- The three Democratic candidates for governor will meet for a live We the People/Wisconsin Forum with voters at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5.

Thomas Barrett, James Doyle, and Kathleen Falk will take part in the forum with citizens before their primary on Sept. 10. It will be aired live statewide on Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) and on Wisconsin Public Radio's Ideas Network stations. In the Madison area, it will also be aired on tape at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, on WISC-TV.

The forum will not follow the standard question-and-answer format. Instead, the candidates will be asked to discuss with each other (and later with a group of citizens in the studio) their ideas and solutions for tackling the billion-dollar-plus state budget deficit.

The forum will not be moderated. Jerry Huffman, co-anchor of WPT's WeekEnd, will explain the premise. Then the candidates will be largely on their own.

While citizens have expressed concerns about many issues, such as taxes, health care, and education - all roads lead back to funding.

Approximately 60 of those citizens also will be present in the studio listening to the candidates. After the live, hour-long show, the candidates have been invited to stay for another half-hour and interact with the citizens.

These interactions between citizens and candidates will also be documented with hand-held cameras and by all the We the People partner organizations for further news coverage of the forum the next day, including on "WeekEnd."

Wisconsin Public Radio will follow the debate with a live call-in program for listener reaction.

We the People also will sponsor a general election gubernatorial forum, scheduled for Oct. 29.

Directed by Paul Verhoeven, the sophomoric story of teen romance and military bloodlust is a tiresome special-effects bore. Excessive violence, a sexual encounter, nudity, coarse language, and a sexual expletive. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification of the theatrical version was O - morally offensive. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was R - restricted.
